245/45 to a 225/50 tire
245/45 to a 225/50 tire
Have any of y'all jumped sizes before from 225 to 245? Or gone down. Was there a performance difference that you could notice? I have 245s now and need new ones. The 225s are 200$ cheaper. I know they r not as wide, is it worth the extra 200 for the 245s? I have an XS. I am doing the pilot sport a/s 3 from Michelin. Any input on these or the ones you have would b great. The r 743 out the door at Costco.
Assuming you have the original wheels that your car came with, then they really are not optimal for the 245 width tires you currently have.
The 245 width tire on a 7-1/2" rim is slightly 'pinched', whereas a 225 width is just right or neutral. Typically performance is enhanced when running a neutral to just slightly 'stretched' tire. This is a subtle thing, not overt by any means.
It's just that if you had two sets of wheels, the first at 8-1/2" wide with 245 width tires, and the other set at 7-1/2" wide with the same 245 tires, you should see a slight performance edge with the first set due to the better rim-to-tire width matching.
My guess is that you probably don't push your car hard enough to worry about subtle performance differences though, so going with a properly sized tire width for your wheels (i.e. 225/50) and getting a cost advantage out of it would be my recommendation. They will undoubtedly be able to handle whatever you ask of them.
One thing though, I hope you aren't just doing this size change to appease those quacks at the dealership that told you that those 245's were causing traction control issues.

Well, I have had 245/45/18's on, ( in the summer) for 3 years. and yes I autocross with these. I have an X, so my stock size was 225/55/17's The Kumo's I have for summer are W-rated, and pretty sticky, obviously the stock 225's are V-rated. Also, 245's are IMO, to wide to put on stock Infiniti rims, so I have OZ ultraleggera's that are the same weight as my stock 17's AND they are the same rolling diameter, so speedo is the same! The OZ wheels are 8 inches wide, as opposed to 7.5 for your XS wheels, and my X wheels.... As far as the width goes, I like the 245's some guys go wider yet, they fill up the wheel wells very nicely, ( I am lowerd on Eibachs) hope this helps.....
As for my driving style, I bought the car used with new falcon tires on them. I know these rnt quality. I only got about 18k out of them. I do open her up in the curves whenever possible. I will test out the 225s.
I have found out that costco give a 30 day test drive period. So if I don't like the way the 225s look/ride, I can get a store credit for the 245s. Thanks for the help guys.
Thanks for your time and thanks for your advice.
