Warped rotors... again

As most G35 sedan owners with the Sport Package already know, the front rotors are very prone to warping. At 160k miles, I have turned my rotors at least 4 times. There was a factory service bulletin relieved for this model on this issue, but I was an early 07' owner and took it upon myself to have them turned at Pep Boys as a do-it-yourself project before the bulletin.

This time it only took one very hard stop while trying to do the right thing and stop for a quick red light. Really! One stop!

It is amazing how the wobbling of the brakes makes the whole car feel old and junky. I have to fix this soon.

Uhh, you should probably replace your rotors instead of trying to turn them. As you keep turning them they warp even quicker. You may have even passed the limit of how much they can be turned. Usually rotors can be turned around 3 times max before they're rendered unsafe.

I've replaced the rotors in my car with Centric Premium Rotors/ High carbon ones and have not had any issue with warping. They've been in service for 2.5 years with 30k miles on them.

I don't waste time turning rotors. better and easier to jus replace em

Have any of you that have switched over to cross drilled still experienced warping?

saywat? 06-06-2014 04:41 PM

switched to slotted. no issues

I have had good luck with my stoptech sloted rotors...around 20k miles without any problems.

stoptech is great. I too have it along with their pads. great prices great performance. no complaints here

Thanks for your input. I've have metal masters up front on the stock rotors and the dust is too much for not stopping any better. I was happier with the Infiniti pads.

I switched to slotted and drilled no problems. They came with lifetime warranty for warping n cracking!

OEM Rotors are junk. The more you turn them, the faster they get warped due to getting skinnier.
Here is my experience with aftermarket rotors.

^is that not expected when turning them over and over?

not sure what you asking here.

Faster warping is expected after you turn your rotors however it is very insignificant. On quality rotors it will actually take significant effort to warp the rotors. Maybe even several 60 to 0 stops. When turning rotors very small amount of metal is removed, so your warping time difference will be very insignificant (meaning they will heat up like a half a second faster than they use to).

Basically hot spots appear (rotor warping) on rotors due to incorrect braking. You have to understand that your rotors and brake pads are most effective at certain temperature range. Hotter and they warp, colder and they don't brake effectively. So one must exercise correct braking procedures in order to preserve rotors integrity. On long down hills you should use a braking procedure knows as "stab braking". Depress brake pedal hard, once your speed has been reduced to 5-10 miles, release the pedal. Repeat the procedure once your vehicle gained those 5-10 miles back. If you gain those 5-10 miles too fast and don't feel that you give your rotors enough time to cool down, down shift to a lower gear.
Normal city driving/braking should not cause quality rotors warp or develop hot spots (as long as you don't constantly ride your brakes).

OEM rotors on Nissan and Infiniti cars are not considered "quality rotors". So they warp while car is in a parking lot on a sunny day.

As far as turning rotors. It is always good to turn rotors (even if there are no hot spots or warping) every time you put on new pads.

BTW. OP.
Another very common issue with our cars that causes brake pedal vibration is improperly torqued lug nuts. If you over torque the lug nuts it might actually warp the rotors and cause pedal vibration. This issue is usually easily fixed by releasing lug nuts and torquing them to OEM specs.

I have an '07 Sport

There was a TSB to replace heat shields on front wheels.

Other than that, I've replaced pads once in 49k miles. That's it.

Do you remember what was different about the front shields?

The front shields cover the inside of the rotor. The stock shields really don't do anything--they are so small.
