Tempted to go to the dark side...

Hi,

Bought 2007 G35S 5AT in 12/2006. It has been an awesome car and I'm at 49k miles now. I'm pushing 8 years with the car and really tempted to jump to a 2014 535i M Sport with sport auto transmission.

I am very conflicted. I suspect it will be a downgrade in driving experience...even though the 535i powertrain is far smoother, that car is much heavier and a bit more isolated/refined.

Not sure what to do...

^^^Ha I'm from Aurora myself...The BMW is a very nice ride but as you stated it will be a completely different driving experence. You might have to sacrifice drivability for the comforts and refinement the bimmer offers. Tough choice man , good luck with whatever you decide to do.

P.s. I'd keep the G Haha

Haha

I'm at Eola & NY. You still live in the area?

The G certainly seems to be more hardcore than any non-M BMW one can buy...but it certainly feels less "badass" than when I got it new...

It may feel less "badass" but that's the beauty of our aftermarket. Every time I get too "use" to its capabilities, I throw on another mod and I'm happy again for awhile. Plus bimmers breaks down all the time. Obviously, I'm biased but the G is something I plan on driving until the wheels fall off. Then I'm gonna put em back on and drive it some more.

Depends. If its 49k hwy miles and just not driven very often then that's awesome. If, however, its 49k miles worth of 3 mile round trips, that's a different story.

The 535 will be a totally different car. Different weight class, more of a comfort approach, and less of a driver's car.

It's really up to what you need man; judging from your desire for the Beemer im gonna guess you're in a financially stable position. That means you're gonna want to replace the G eventually and it's just a question of whether or not you want to hold out a bit longer. As someone said above modding is an option for the excitement factor, but then again that brings the value down.

With the low mileage and Sport package, you can sell your G for probably 16k+. Also, I'm sure you'd be happy with the better mileage figures, haha.

GL, whatever your decision

You'd be close to M3 pricing, I think I'd go w/ that if the back seats aren't needed for long trips.

OP why wouldn't you look at a 335i? Those are the direct competitor to the G35/37. Only difference being they're faster, and a better drivers car (I'm comparing my '07 g35s vs an '07 335i sedan, and yes I've driven both). I'd absolutely get the BMW if I wasn't worried about cost of off-warranty ownership!

(Can't comment at all on the brand new 335/435 bmws)

OP I recently test drove the 550xi with M Package, Audi A7 Prestige and S4. Out of all the cars S4 felt more of the german more powerful cousin of the G. I was planning to keep my G35xS since it has 109K miles on it right now. But decided against it and waiting on something new. Possibly the new Tesla.

I still love the G for what it is. Power balance with the G growl still puts smiles on my face. I also think trading the G is lot easier than selling it privately but dealer's will twist your arm with the trade in.

If you're looking at a 535i M Sport, I'd say look at the new M3. It's only a few grand more.

8 years later he may have different needs / wants out of a car. Drive it, see if you like it. Although 8 years later , I'm still mad that my seats don't fold down.
