Most install oil catch can between return line from PCV mounted on passenger side valve cover to intake.

I run two oil catch cans. One for PCV return and other from driver side valve cover vent to air filter.

If FI its beneficial to drill out PCV for adequate vent under boost. You will need to install another check valve, my choice is the MOROSO Accusump check valves.

Unless you're running boost, there is no reason for using a catch can (other than bling ).

I still don't get how having it lay side ways like that doesn't cause the oil to be sucked into the hose going out back into the IM

it collects a good amount of oil in the can. I think that alone is beneficial enough

I disagree ^ while installing Motordynes 1/2" spacer back in '05 I discovered oil residue in my upper plenum. Remember Dave O editor of Nissan Sport mag? Contacted Dave and he suggested I start with Home Depot's simple catch can, that's what he was running at the time. Spent more $$ on quality line/hose than the can, and it worked! After installing a polished upper plenum months later, there was no sign of oil residue! I currently run a polished C6 Vette catch can, bling maybe but it collects oil residue which I'd rather not have running thru my plenum...Gary
