Unhappy looking in to replacing my cat converters

Greetings. My 08G35x has 96K miles on it and is in excellent mechanical condition except for the fact that both of my converters are rattling like cans of marbles and it has been worsening over the past several months.

I live in as state that will need CARB complaint converters and to have both replaced will be near $1500-$1700 which I find absurd.

What are my options? Would a junkyard be a good source? even aftermarkets cats are very pricey and using non CARB cats I think would be too risky.

As always, thanks for your ideas...

Did you check your heatshields to see if that's what causing the rattling you're hearing? If it indeed is the heat shields, you can cut them off if you desire.

Heat sheilds are not the problem but thanks for the idea.

Keep an eye out on this forum. We see sub $300 OEM cats all the time (not all states have smog, and most of our owners go HFC or test pipes). Post a WTB thread. I just bought OEM cats with 30k miles on them for $200 (thanks bigc!!).

Thanks for the offer! I'll find out the compatibility of coupe vs sedan and let you know.

Coupe will fit the sedan. In fact, the 07-08 350Z and 370Z cats will fit as well. They are all interchangeable. I did extensive research on my test pipes, as long as you don't go pre-2007 everything is the same.

Wake up call! Before you go out and buy someone's old converters drop by your local muffler shop and tell them what you're experiencing. Converters don't rattle but the shields do, they only need to be welded which you can only tell if it's on a rack and running!

I agree. I had a local shop fix what they called a rattling shield, but the sound is getting worse and worse, I have no change in performance, and I'm going to take what you say seriously and have a look into it before I drop a significant about of money on the cats. thanks.

My first cat went at 40k, replaced under warranty. Second get went 500 miles outside warranty... It rattles but other than that passes inspections fine, so I just live with it now... But the cats on these cars, man they suck so hard. My old maxima did 200k without a single issue with the cats. Wtf.
