I think the main reason the come with 12-pt is to help get a tool into a tight spot.

I was using my 18" breaker bar with a 6-pt and it was tough putting the bar in a spot in the wheel well to get it on the bolt. With a 6 pt, you have 45* of range. With the 12pt you have 22.5 degrees of range to get it on a bolt.
