08 hvac compressor broke - advice needed

My backyard mechanic diagnosed that my 08 sedan's hvac compressor just went bad at 177K miles. I called the dealership and they quoted $1100 for just the compressor. They want me to bring it in for a diagnosis and estimate with labor. I am guessing they will want $1500 - $2000 total. Would this be something that I could do myself? If so, are there any good DIY compressor replacements for the 07-08 sedan. Any other suggestions on how to save money would be appreciated. Thanks,

You can replace the physical components but it requires a licensed shop to charge the system (not necessarily to charge but to BUY the refrigerant in bulk containers) with that many miles on the system I recommend replacing all the seals for the lineset fittings. The compressor is the most expensive component so don't be shocked by a $500 price tag for another one. Shop around and get quotes from shops for a full job and for just a full charge.
