Engine Splash Shield
Engine Splash Shield
So I bought a replacement splash shield for my 08 X model and I'm curious as to why the flap that it has doesn't have a way to stay fully closed. It's got 4 screws holding it on the back side and it just dangles down on the front side. Is there a real reason to have it do that? Or can I just zip-tie it closed?

I doubt that part used bolts with nut clips. Look at the holes at the corners on the splash shield. There's no way the nut clips will fit without modification. I would just use the plastic retainers
edit: Upon more looky looky at the photo...I don't know which is up or down. If the nut clips go on the flap then no problem. Just seems unlikely they'd use 3 bolts for a small flap like that.

It uses nut clips. The nut clips are somewhat spring-loaded so they will 'clamp' on the plastic part of the non-flap portion. Two of mine have fallen off over time and only one remains and it's more than enough to keep the flap closed. Or maybe the outside ones were push-pin type and only the center one used a fastener and nut-clip.
Coat the threads of both the jack nut and the bolt prior to installation. If any rust forms on either one. the jack nut will spin and you will never get it off. Happened to a friend and he had to remove the entire shield so he could hold the nut with pliers to take off the bolt.
