Yesterday, I drove about 3 miles from my office to drop something off. Pulled up, left car running, and noticed a little amount of steam/smoke coming from under the front of the car. It have been cold and rainy so I figured it was from driving steam from through a puddle. When I was getting back in the car, I noticed a maple syrup smell but was rushing and really didn’t think about coolant. On the way back my heat quit and I saw an excess amount of steam in my rear view. I immediately checked the temp gauge and saw it was fluctuating rapidly. Because it was floating around the midway point I tried to finish my drive back, but about a mile away the temp skyrocketed. Parked immediately, killed the power, and checked under the hood to find everything covered in coolant/water. I had it towed shortly after and began to check it out last night. Everything was covered in coolant and still saw drips from multiple places. I turned the engine on after adding some water never saw an obvious leak. Left the car there for the night.

Today I went back and checked under the car first. The only wet spot was directly under where the lower radiator hose connects to the engine and where I’m assuming the water pump weap hole is. I then started checking for obvious potential failure points.

- No obvious damage from radiator hoses.
-No obvious damage to heater hose closer to the fire wall.

I put another 2qts of water in then started the car.
- No leaks
- Heat works great
- No temp fluctuations or cooling issue.

I let it run for around an hour, checking for leaks throughout.

Then drove it lighty, all good.
Punched it to 6,500 rpm’s, all good

no signs of trouble since the eruption of coolant yesterday.

I should add now, the past three winters I have had the temporary belt “Whine” after a cold start, only to stop after.

3 days ago the belt began whining after starting and with acceleration through the day.

It also seams to whine more when the heat is on.

the whine is coming from around the idle, tension, and alternator pully.

TWO QUESTIONS:

- Is there coordination between the wining belt and water pump since the water pump is time chain driven.

- ANY ADVISE on what the overall issue is?

Pressure test the coolant system, what you described sounds like it was losing coolant slowly over time as vapor, then it hit the threshold where it could no longer cool the system and it flash oveheated and boiled the coolant which pukes it everywhere.

Something as simple as a bad radiator cap that won't hold pressure can cause this, pressure test the cap, then the system, can't remember exactly what the pressure test spec is but typically if you just test the cap and verify it's holding within range then test the entire system at like 2psi over cap pressure then you're good.

Whining belts and water pump function would be completely separate on these engines.
