email notification links to wrong page
email notification links to wrong page
I'm not sure exactly what causes it, but if you're setup for instant email notifications, and it's a fairly fast moving thread, sometimes the link in the email will send you to a few pages back from where you need to be (posts you've already seen)
The problem is a LOT worse if you use 2 or 3 different computers in a day to check the forum. (Lending me to believe it's cookie related)
It's only mildly irritating from a computer, but from my phone it drives me nuts.
I get an email update,
click the link in the email,
it takes me 3 pages back to stuff I've already read yesterday,
but I have to wait for the page to load (much slower on a phone)
then scroll over and click "next page"
wait for more loading,
see if it's new posts,
it's not
click next page again,
wait some more
finally get all caught up,
close browser.
.....one hr later...
get email update,
click link,
takes me to 5 pages ago back in yesterdayland again
give up.
I have figured out a solution though.
The code that generates the email notification just needs to be tweaked a little.
On a "daily notification" email, it makes the links point to the actual post, whereas an "instant notification" email points to a 'new-post' link.
Here's what I'm talking about (I'm removing the http so it doesn't autoparse these links)
If I got a link to the photo of the day thread in an instant notification email, it would look like this:
g35driver.com/forums/photography/76754-photo-day-everyone-likes-pretty-pictures-new-post.html
see the -new-post in there?
That link sends me to God only knows where in the thread.
And if I click the link on one computer, another computer might send me to an entirely different page.
A daily update email links differently though.
The links there look like this:
g35driver.com/forums/photography/76754-photo-day-everyone-likes-pretty-pictures-post5635419.html#post5635419
This links directly to the exact post.
Doesn't matter what browser or computer I click that link from, it sends me to the right place.
So if the code that generates the instant notification email was changed to make the link point to the actual post number that generated the notification, rather than just "new-post" then it would work right.

Yeah, it's not that big of a deal on the computer. Just somewhat annoying. On the phone, it makes what should be quickly checking a thread (30-90 seconds) a huge ordeal (3+ min) and I usually end up giving up on it.

What are email notifications - oh wait I turned those off since I get 100 email notifications a day from driver.

This is a legitimate concern (especially considering I figured out how to fix it, it just needs to be tested and implemented)
Now take your humping monkeys elsewhere!

I actually agree with your argument, hence why I never use the mobile version of this site on my phone, since it is almost impossible to navigate when the email notification is wrong you can spend 10 minutes hitting next, next, next.

and stop monkeying around!
I noticed that sometimes (not sure what triggers it) the email update system sends me a different link.
For example, instead of: g35driver.com/forums/g35-sedan-v35-2003-06/345479-random-little-question-thread-new-post.html
I got this: g35driver.com/forums/showthread.php?t=345479&goto=newpost
Different link, same problem though.

Another problem...
Often, my phone doesn't get the handoff from the -new-post link to the actual page. Instead, it just sits trying to load a page that doesn't exist.
So I have to go to the address bar, remove -new-post, and then find my way through the thread to wherever I left off.
