There are two methods. The default Subscription method is set in your Account. Go to Account, Edit Options and change Default Thread Subscription Mode.

Next, you need to view all your current and past Subscriptions by going to Account and then View all Subscribed Threads. Use the mass select feature and then adjust thread subscriptions for those existing subscriptions.

This is necessary because there's the Default Subscription mode, then there's the ability to customize Subscriptions per thread. Additionally, Default Subscription mode only applies going forward, so View All Subscribed Threads (current subscriptions) also need updated.
