Yes it can be done..
right click the thumbnail
copy location
paste into img tag..

now for the secret.... modify the file name by deleting "_thumb"
eg https://g35driver.com/gallery/files/...aa01_thumb.jpg

oops misunderstood your question..

I've never had a problem with those type of links..however;

When we have a pic already in our user attachment folder.....
It'd be nice if there was a way to use the thumbnail in the post,
instead of just the text link.
The same as when you upload the attachment the first time.
