As an 05 Coupe owner that races it, I can tell you my stock 19" rims...which btw I find to be the best stock looking rims around next to some Bimmer rims, are lighter than most 17" rims out there...

The new 19" rims while being about 10% as good looking, also look heavier so maybe some weight can be saved there, but I believe it's mostly in the doors like aforementioned due to structural rigidity, safety curtains and air bags, and also there is more sound deadening in the new cars too.

It takes one cordless drill, and about 15 minutes to uninstall anything from the front seats back fyi...so if you want to lighten em up, it's not too big a deal at least.

 

Sorry, but the fact that it has more gizmos is still just an excuse for poor engineering on Infiniti's part... to gain this much weight, while using a lot of ligher materials here and there is unacceptable.

And, no... not every modern car has to get heavier and heavier, although they are stuffing more into them.

Just for arguement's sake... anybody wish to explain why the 335i coupe still weighs over 100 pounds less than the G37 coupe, while having the same technology, and ALSO having to deal with the weight of 2 turbos, 2 intercoolers, the associated plumbing and other hardware for forced induction? That's impressive.

I could MAYBE justify about 50 pounds of weight gain over the old G35 coupe. Non-forged wheels, bigger brakes, new variable heads, and of course a pound or so for the 10GB hard drive.



The only Infiniti product I have any interest in at this point would be a G37 sedan. And that looks bleak at this point...

 

Any reason why the G's seats are so "thick".. especially compared to the BMW? I wouldn't be surprised if that ate up some good weight.. not to mention its probably taking away what could've been extra leg room for the back seats.
Note, they BOTH have seat-mounted side-impact airbags...

The seats on the G appear to be thicker due to the side bolsters that extend forward to help keep occupant(s) from slipping during hard cornering, I don't think that would add much weight. The difference of 100lb or so is more likely from combined factors such as larger 3.7L engine displacement (335 is 3.0L turbo-ed), LSD, spare tire vs none in 335, etc.

I'd say Infiniti is about par given both are creeping up in weight to add safety features, give or take. As in the past, the next stage in weight reduction is not to remove features, but to use even lighter and stronger materials which we are starting see in the more expensive new BMW M3 with the V8 engine. My guess is Infiniti will also use such materials in the future, probably in the new Nissan GTR or the rumored M-version of the G37 (this might be Infiniti's version of the GTR).

I think both offer cast aluminum wheels as stock; the previous gen G35 were forged so that would make a difference in rolling weight. Later model years may offer forged but most people that need to care will already buy aftermarket.
