It can but usually it's the key itself that dies not the BCM where the programming is stored. Just had a key fail for my Focus last week...

I took it to the locksmith he said the push button itself doesn't work keys are fine

So I went to the dealer and bought a one one while removing the old one the car finally turned on but the engine didn't.. The locksmith tried to program a new key and I guess he erased the old ones..... So now I have to reprogram the keys again..... but hey I got a new gtr button lol

And the car still won't start now the keys don't unlock or lock the car
Problem now when the button is pressed once it goes straight to ON it doesn't go to ACC....

I took to get a diagnostic at the electrical shop if they find anything if not to the stealership :[

Updateee
The shop said it has a bad bcm and to replace it,program it, get a new key,and install it it 1100
Called the dealer and they quoted me 1200 or 850 if a new key isn't needed.
Off to the stealership it is :'[

Glad it's all worked out. At least you didn't have to replace the BCM
