You don't need the key at all. If the garage door opener is newer than 1996 you need to follow the extra steps for a rolling code opener - the solid light means it's waiting for you to push the "learn" button on the opener before proceeding. I replaced my door opener with a new one on the weekend and had no trouble programming the Homelink using the instructions in the Infiniti user manual - first try, two minutes.

I saw that this thread kept going and I wanted to chime in that in the case of our garage door opener we have to follow the directions for the opener which are totally different than the ones for the car. Took us forever to figure it out with the first G but now it is a snap. Give it a shot and see what happens.

Just hold the remote next to your homelink. Press and hold the homelink button and the garage opener button. Wait till the light starts flashing quickly on the homelink mirror. Once the code is memorized, can use it as long as the garage opener remote you used is paired with your garage opener. It works on my garage and the gate to my neighborhood.

i did all that. i held the garage door opener next to the homelink for like 5 mins! and nothing. just a solid red light. hmmm... could there be something wrong with my homelink? i remember when i first tried it last year, i at least noticed some blinking lights. hmm.. nada.

My mom has an older Q and I have a new G. We have different garage door openers also. I followed the directions in each manual and it worked.

Hmmm...remember something about once you click your clicker and home-link picks it up, you have to click your clicker or is it your home-link button, can't remember, up to three times within a certain time for it to learn your rolling codes. It's been two years since I programmed mine and it's work flawlessly.

Two procedures to program home-link depending if rolling code type door opener or not.

For mine I just kept clicking the garage door opener instead of holding it down and this worked.

what if youve lost your remote? can I use the opener itself to program it somehow?
