Engine Knocking......

My fiances 03 G35 Coupe staring knocking yesterday when we went to start it up. At first it was a little loud & as I let it run for a little it got a little quieter. I turned it off for a few mins & started it back up & it was still knocking but not as loud. You kind of have to listen for it now but it is still there. Any ideas on what it could be? The car is still covered under extended warranty so we plan on taking it in.

Fri Guy, did you happen to check the oil level, and when was the last time she had her oil changed? That would have been the place to start, most women don't know there's oil in their cars or why....

We're all aware how efficient stealerships are at Infiniti. We could only hope that rastaman's post is a joke.
If the engine is knocking at idle I seriously doubt it has anything to do with what kind of gas she's using, under load yes. If her oil looks good she may have other major issues which I wouldn't go to Infiniti for since her G is an '03 and out of warranty....maybe Nissan....more reliable and costs less!

Her car is coming almost due for it's next oil change. It's about 200 miles short. I did check the dip stick but couldn't get an good reading. I turned the car off & let it sit for a few mins & when I would pull the dipstick out it would be full of oil all the way up top. I would wipe it down & put it back in then pull it back out to recheck it but it would be the same. The oil would be all over the dip stick.

She always runs 93 octane.

When I first brought my car early last year I noticed a knocking sound when idle after a good 20 mile ride.
Saw the threads about the Oil Consumption issue and took it to the stealership and said fix it.
They told me the same bs about the knocking sound being normal. They did the OC test for a few months and did see any issues.
I didn't question the knocking any more b/c it doesn't do it when in gear, only when in park.

if it is a 6mt it could be clutch chatter. i know my g has a very noticeable clutch chatter when in neutral and with the clutch out. start the car let it idle and wait for the knocking, then depress the clutch. if the knocking disappears it is just clutch chatter…

You need to let the car sit for about 30 minutes to get an accurate reading. Otherwise, the dipstick will usually say its full.

It's an Auto. I never checked to see if it made it while in gear. But it never made it before at all. Something doesn't seem right.

Ah low octane gas isn't going to make the motor knock while you start it / idle it.

i just recently got my g so i really dont have much experience with the engine internals, but from past experience valve lash can easily cause this instance… but dont take my word too seriously because i have not had to deal with any internal issues yet…
