Cool COol Trick For NavI

Hey guys thought you might think this was cool yesterday i took my dash apart for my avelectronics part and i also opened my cluster and there was a white wire with a green stripe for my speed sensor i cut that and put a regular 1 doller switch on it so now when im on the highway if i take that switch off my passanger or even i can put an address in or a poi etc. the navi thinks im parked and allows all my features this way i dont have to pull over when i want to go somewhere.

i know its dangerous for me 2 do it but not for my passanger.

Be careful tho bro and be safe.

don't forget also that while the switch is engaged you will be able to input data to the navi, but the computer will also have trouble tracking you on the map display without the speed sensor input. it will also affect the mpg calculations, etc in the navi information display if left open. best not to leave it switched longer than is necessary to input the data.

I'm going to make a board that will do this for you, including pressing the OK button after startup. I could pump out a batch of 10 or 20 pretty cheaply. KPTechnologies makes a board that does this that looks pretty cool, but I'm interested in a smaller package that doesn't require a separate relay and is cheaper. Mine would be less than 1"x1" and have a small screw terminal block for attaching switched power / ground / OK button wire / speed wire in / speed wire out. Anybody interested?

i would be interested in this if there's an easy/clean way to integrate this into the ashtray area or something like that.

You would need to disassemble the nav system to solder a wire to the OK button and get to the speed wire, so you would just leave the little hack board back behind the nav.

as mentioned earlier, i think disabling that input screws up the navigation system's computations. it would be better to have it be a toggle switch, so the board going behind the navi makes sense but it would need to be hooked up to some sort of switch.

Of course! I think you're underestimating the hack board. The board would be intelligent so it would disconnect the speed wire when you wanted. For example, the board could wait until you clicked the OK button twice in less than 1 second, and then disconnect the speed wire until the OK button remains un-pressed for 15 seconds or so (or something along those lines). Each time you press OK it would reset that 15 second timer. That idea first came from Kevin at KPTechnologies but it seems like a pretty obvious and intuitive way of controlling the speed line without an external switch.

I was thinking of getting even trickier, and recording how many speed sensor pulses came in while the speed line was disconnected, and then sneak those extra pulses back in to the nav after the line is reconnected to keep the mileage and trip computer calculations accurate.

Thoughts?
