Re: recons - advice and experience
hi g35five_0:
my experience with recon five years ago is primarily negative. i would get pulled over for not having recon, as well as getting pulled over so the officer could check my recon. either way, we was getting pulled over a lot. it kind of discouraged me to modify my car for a while. in fact, it made me sell that car (96 civic) for a SUV. but modifying cars is my hobby, and that's all i have passion for. my next car was the Acura RSX-S, which i modified as well - but did not bother to get recon.
the recon process and reasoning behind it is troubled with many flaws, in my opinion. more and more stores continue to pop up and sell modification parts that require recon, but they never educate the customer about recon regulations or violations. the recon office is hardly consistent with what they call passing or failing cars. in addition, most of the recon requirements are so out dated that it makes "passing" difficult for even stock cars.
we should see if stores would support the recon initiative so there is education about compliances. also, we should update the recon regulations for today's technologies and products including types of cars.
to me, the real goal for recon should be safety.

thanks g35Five_O for starting the thread. also thanks nicnoobie for the link.
i still have a few questions.... so, once you get the recon, you never have to go back again even if you add stuff? or on the recon paper, will it say what specifically is approved and you gotta go back every time you change something?
this stuff is foreign to me. i modded previous cars before but never did get a recon sticker. just want to do everything right this time around with my z. tia for any help.
oh, also if you install the exhaust by yourself, how do you get the affidavid?

Yes, you got to go back for every new mod you do that comes under the recon law. When you are pulled over, lets hope not, the officer checks the vehicle against the recon documents. If there is something there that is not on the documnet, he can take your recon and cite you. Then you have to go through the process all over again.
I checked out that other link and I learned a thing or two.

just remember to get there early, and i mean early! they only go from noon to 3pm, that's it, and if you don't get checked by 2:30pm, you're SOL and gotta come back another day. i recommend getting there by at least 11:15am. better to wait 45 minutes, than wait 2-3hrs! also, if you're car got dropped, be sure to have alignment papers w/in the past 30 days, or else you're gonna have to come back. also, if you did lower it, make sure that your fog lights and/or the bottom of your license plate is not lower than 12in from the ground. hope that helps!

As far as I know, to get everything passed at the recon station, an affidavit is needed in order to pass. The affidavit should contain any parts that have been added to modify a vehicle. Current safety check and registration to accompany it as well along with a fee.
To obtain an affidavit, I think you can go to any car shop to schedule an appointment.

Re: recons - advice and experience
It's funny to me because it just seems that RECON is a way for the state to make extra funds...Reason being is that you go there to get recon, not to mention, they are only open like (10-3 M-F) or something like that...You basically have to make your car almost stock!!!...For the G35 good luck because isnt this cars front plate below 12 inches anyways? Also, if the plate is below 12 inches then the center of the headlight has got to be below 23 inches? Well, never took the time to measure...So if the vehicle was dropped, then unless you strap the plate to the grill, there is no way that you can get it over 12 inches...Strange!...But the cool thing is that you can now have coil-over suspension as long as it's not adjustable from the inside of the vehicle..But of course, you have to get an affidavit for your parts to state that its legal...Unless your cool with a shop that piece of paper ranges from $25-40!!!...Also, don't forget $15 for the inspection, so that $15+$40 in the worst case scenerio...$55 for RECON!!!...Don't forget that if you modify after that then you have to go through the process again so thats $55 everytime you add a part!!!...I'm sure that most of the racers now go through the internet to buy parts unless they get hooked up at shops so my advice is to find a friend at your local parts store if you want RECON!!! Good Luck!

Re: recons - advice and experience
yes, local 808 is right....no affadavits or receipts of purchase are needed.... $15 for inspection fee, whether you pass or fail....non refundable. 30 days to make changes....
if you drop your car, just as long as the center of the headlight is not below 22 inches....measured mine at stock height, is 26.5 inches....you will also need to show proof of your alignment being within factory specs.
got mine yesterday....hours of operation were from 12-3pm M-F
