As far as places to eat, you definitely have to try Leonard's Bakery, L&L, Boston's pizza, and as much of the traditional dishes. Hanauma Bay if you like snorkeling. You can take the bus that goes around the island, you can go see the palace. There's really plenty things to do there. Where are you gonna be staying?

Which island are you going? did you rent a car? If not, I highly recommend to rent a car so you get to see more. I went to Oahu for the first time in my life at June and I had a great time in driving around. Each beach looks different including of color of ocean and sands. A tour book would help, you can also find local travel agency for discount activity. You don't have to bring many stuffs because local stores are not expensive- same price as here except with only 4% sale tax (i.e. I pick up many stuffs such as water, sunblock, wines, shirts at local ABC store, I also went to Walmart to shop to gifts).

If on Oahu, I suggest Cheeseburger in Paradise, Yardhouse (go early...GREAT food, and good bar at night..over 100 beers on tap), Ono Cheesesteak is a place that everyone seems to love, check out Ted's Bakery on the Northshore for breakfast and great pies, Sam Choy's, shrimp trucks (meals on wheels style, but parked all over the island), Roy's....

Those are my food suggestions...

For fun and for the kids, don't go to the zoo..the one here is tiny, and you probably have a better one near you. The aquarium is decent, there is a glow putt-putt in waikiki...do the Magic of Polynesia, your kids will really enjoy it...Dole plantation has Guinness book of records '08 worlds largest maze, and the Atlantis submarine ride. All things that you can enjoy as well. If you have the cash to spend, do the Polynesian culture center too...and see Ha, Breath of Life...I have really enjoyed watching that show and you'll get a lot of the "island" style entertainment from it.

Just came back from Waikiki. I'm not sure how old are your kids, but Diamond Head Crater Peak has one of the best views. Iolani Palace. Lots of tours to circle the island. Dole Plantation. Hanauma Bay for snorkeling. Byodo-In Temple. Tropical Farm Macadamia Nut Farm. Halona Blowhole. Pearl Harbor> USS Arizona, w/c is a free tour, Battleship Missouri and the submarine Bowfin you have to pay for.
Lots of shuttle buses to go around and take you to your hotel. Call Roberts Hawaii for shuttle buses from the airport to ypur hotel. 808 831 1555 for dispatch, and 808 539 9440 for reservations. For taxis call 808 841 2928. If you are renting a car, rent it at the airport. Mustang convertible is like $65 at the airport, and $240 plus around Waikiki. Also if you rent a car, parking overnight in the hotels are $20/night. International Marketplace in Waikiki for souvenirs. Kalakaua Avenue is beautiful at night. Our hotel is by Lewers St, so everything was walking distance to Kalakaua Ave.

Go to Germaine Luau. Talk to the hotel concierge. There's a lot of info on the Oahu Guide, and they are all over the island.

iPhone Maps and Yelps Apps for restaurants, FTW!! I didn't even use my GPS.
