JDM DD conversion
JDM DD conversion
I'm pretty sure I wanna do the double din conversion, since I have my old DVD unit sitting here in my room from my old car. Has anyone done this? I know it's not gonna be easy, but just wanna hear other peoples stories. Also, where is the best place to order the parts from? I checked with Grubbs, but the A/C control is on back order right now. Any suggestions?
^ Grubb's, would be your best part. It's cheaper, and quicker to get it through them them directly from Japan. Grubbs mass order's them. Usually cleaning out the inventory in Japan.
check out my DIY guide, it'll tell you how to get all the parts for the 03-04 models.

email me at infiniti72@gmail.com for those that have questions about the DD conversion process. Yes, I have done it for my 04 coupe. If you have an 05 model, contact GRider35c (Kia), he has done the 05 conversion.
I will be in honolulu in June 22-25 so I can potentially help anyone out sometime around that time.

iiiyaaah, wassup doc?! (i always wanted to say that!) ohhkaay, that was lame. anyways, wow, all this time i thought you drove a sedan - but i saw your dg coupe - that car's pretty sick! are you like the only one with a coupe in waimea or what? hehe, better not run any stop signs over there or the cops'll know where to look! also, too bad that stupid superferry's not up yet, you could just "drive" your car to oahu when you come here in june!

there are about 3 coupes and 1 sedan up here in waimea. There are about 4 or 5 coupes in Kona and the same in Hilo (I think). So, the G is still pretty rare here on the BI which is good since it still turns heads 15 months since I brought it over here. I guess the new thing around here is I have seen a flood of Scion Tc's (G knockoff) around here.
as for the police up here, half of them I either see as patients or know them through meeting them in the ER. Most of them know my G and let me go esp. without a front license plate. ( I do have a black license plate with a chrome INFINITI and Mt Fuji symbol on it though).

to work on changing out dual climate control buttons on the AC controller takes an 1.5 hour or so depending on your soldering skills and patience.
to diassemble your HVAC unit, swap out your aftermarket HU and reassemble your HVAC takes about 30-45 minutes. Initially, this process takes about 1.5 hours too.
remember you have to splice in the Scorsche NN03 wire harness in, hook up the antenna adapter and make sure you have remote power wire hooked up to your amp(s). This takes another hour or so.
If you run RCAs and remote power wire to the amps in the trunk, that takes another 1.5 hour or so.
BUT....
its so well worth it and will save you a ton on installation costs. Its really not that hard but just takes a lot of time and patience.
My initial DD conversion took me about 8 hours to do everything (2 hours a night for 4 nights). Now that I know why the AC make go crazy after the DD conversion will save others time knowing how to diagnose the problem and how to fix it. (My AC was screwed up after conversion until I figured out the problem). Whew! that was stressful.

what about G35 coupe with nav,,,,how different would it be to do DD conversion??

to do the conversion with the stock nav IS possible BUT will be seemingly difficult......
here is a quote from a post with that same question addressed from g35audioman....
"I have my nav voice intact. I used a seperate speaker for the nav voice. When the prompts come on, the deck mutes and the sound comes through the speaker.
Check my sig for a link to my system. The speaker is mounted right below my headunit.
The following post isn't mine, but it should help some of you out. Also, this post was for the 03-04 cars, so i'm not sure if anything has changed with the new models. I'm just posting it since it should give people an idea as to how this task can be accomplished.
Here is the post about the process. It is from My350z.com. I'm not sure who the original poster was though. I had it saved on my computer a while back:
Linking the factory nav system to a new head unit...
For those of you trying to install a new head unit in your Z, but keep the existing factory navigation system, and keep the voice, the info below will work ! THis is what I did, and it works great, just like the factory navigation system does. Keep in mind that you will have to have a Mute capable head unit, and you will have to wire a seperate speaker for the nav voice. A small price to pay for the much better sound you will get out of an aftermarket head unit.
Anyways, here is what I did:
The output of the NAV system is about 7.5-9 volts. This is not enough voltage to trip a standard 12 volt (30A) relay. So, what I did was this. You have to setup a 2 stage system, composed of a transistor and 12v relay, to switch the mute circuit on a new head unit.
Parts I used:
1. Potter and Brumfield 12V Relay (Bosch will work too)
2. TIP31 high power NPN Transistor (Radio shack sells it)
3. Various length wires and crimp-type connectors
4. 1 kohm resistor (1/4 watt)
NAVI-SYSTEM WIRE MAP:
Mute wire from NAVI control to head unit - R/B
NAVI earth ground - B/P
NAVI Voice input + L/B
NAVI Voice input - W/B
Transistor circuit:
All transistors consist of a Base (B), Collector (C), and an Emitter (E). The pacakge will tell you, if you buy it from ratshack, or look online for a datasheet for your transistor. THis circuit will work for an NPN only. A pnp transistor will be wired differnetly, so make sure you get the proper parts !
1. Wire Mute (R/B) from NAVI control to the transistor Base (B) through a 1kohm resistor (Limits the current so you don't fry the TIP31).
2. Wire the Emitter (E) to vehicle ground
3. Wire the collector (C) to postion 85 on 12V relay
Relay CIrcuit:
1. From 3 above, wire the output of the collector to position 85 of a 12v relay.
2. Wire postion 86 to 12v switched by the ignition (only on when key is on)
3. Wire postion 30 of the 12v relay to vehicle ground
4. Wire positon 87 of the 12v relay to mute input on the new head unit.
5. Position 87a is not connected
Here's what happens:
When the voice control turns on for the navi system, it send the R/B wire high (7.5 volts). This voltage triggers the transistor to open up, and essentially provide ground to the relay. Once the relay is grounded, the relay is energized, and switches the constant ground (suppleid by terminal 30) to position 87, and supplies a ground signal output from the 12v relay. This ground signal MUTES your new head unit. THat's all...simple circuit, great results !
Don't forget that you will have to add a seperate speaker for navi voice under your seat, and run the 2 voice output wires from the navi control to this speaker. If you mount it under the driver's seat, you may have to turn the volume up slightly to hear it...
Good luck, and I hope this helps those who are adding aftermarket headunits to a Z with factory navigation...
