I'm sure it's mostly a status issue. I mean, if you can afford it without issue, it's certainly an item that not many are going to have.

I'm sure there are some of you who will spend much more than is necessary on a suit or shoes, just to express your taste and to show that you can afford nicer things. Certainly, a more reasonable alternative would serve the purpose without hindering your career.
