Problem with Nismo CAI?

I just installed the Nismo CAI system and managed to do it without cutting anything as I've read others do in other posts. The sound is great outside with the hood open, inside no real difference to me. I did have to set my ECU because I started the engine with the MAF plugged in to turn my tires (oops).

I'm getting a slight pop sound when I release the accelerator. Almost like a backfire that is not making it throught the CAT system. Has anyone else had this with their intake system, specifically the Nismo? Should I even worry about it?

I'll know soon; I install mine this week. Are you coupe or sedan? What do you mean by "I started the engine with the MAF plugged in to turn my tires (oops)." The MAF was plugged into something it wasn't supposed to be plugged into?

DBLDN11,

I've had my Nismo CAI for 6 months now and so far I haven't encounter any problems. Does the popping sound occurs only when you rev the engine (static) or does it also pops when you are driving?

Re: Problem with Nismo CAI?

The sound only occurs when I release the accelerator after reving the engine. I'm sure its not static. I've been told that its somehow due to the increase airflow to the engine and that my ECU will probably correct it after some use. I mis-typed earlier, I meant to say that the MAF wasn't plugged in, in fact the intake system wasn't even on (stupid I know, did't even think about it till after I started it).

As far as the install, I've never installed an intake myself I had a shop install the intake on my WRX. This was easy and like I said earlier I just followed the directions and didn't have to do any cutting. As for the z-tube it merely replaces the stock tube on the G, but the Nismo is an entire CAI. I think was some people are doing is replacing the tube and then later buying the Stillen box and replacing it as well. I found that it was cheaper to purchase the Nismo CAI than the other two.

Re: Problem with Nismo CAI?

If you aren't mechanically inclined, the Z-tube is the way to go. It takes 10 minutes and is very easy. If you want a bit of a challenge, both the Nismo and Injen require a bit more engineering skill, but nothing major, and the performance gains are purported to be larger.

Both the Nismo and Injen intake systems connect directly to the plenum, and in so doing replace the currently installed breather tube, be it stock, Z-type or what have you.

Does the cone filter on the NISMO CAI sit as low as the INJEN? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Re: Problem with Nismo CAI?

I just ordered the 1990 for my sedan.
Paid $249+ Tax free shpping www.ajusa.com
I'm really looking forward to how well it performs and plan on doing a "dyno" run!

Did any of you change the stock exhaust too or left the "stock" exhaust? If you changed the stock exhaust sytem, which exhaust would you recommend for the sedan auto or should I leave it alone?

Does anyone have pics of it "polished" and "installed"?
How simple is it to install?
Do I have to take it to a shop or are the instructions fairly simple?

Thanks for any info you guys can provide!

subrobo,

Actually, the Nismo R-tune CAI is a complete kit and you won't need the Z-tube.

I don't know exactly where the Nismo and Injen air filters rest relative to each other, but the pictures posted here an elsewhere seem to lead to very similar locations.
