Federal crime in replacing unbroken Catalyst

Anyone notice that its a federal violation to replace unbroken catalyst converter in any vehicle. Its even worst in California that its violation if you replace your broken catalyst that is not OEM.

This is printed on the Random Cat ads in Magazines.

Ouch. That sure won't impress Bubba when you're roomates at the federal pen. "Whatcha in for?" Messin' with a cat converter? Yup, that'll make the bad guys back up.

"Dude, that's totally gay" - Eric Cartman

What court of law could possibly prove the stock cat wasn't broken? Just take a nice sledgehammer to your stock converter and keep it as evidence.

Worrying about going to jail for changing out your cats seems a bit trifling.

Personally, I'd be more concerned about the truly heinous crimes against humanity, such as tinting your windows or not having a front license plate installed.

The vehicle code is for the birds.

In the State of Kalifornia... you will need a certificate from the repair shop (and insurance company?? - not sure on that part) stating that your cat was destroyed. not many shops will provide this.

Also, i believe the fine around here is $10k per Cat (that's...hmmm, let's see....10 thousand... one two, three...carry the one, move the decimal... $40,000.00 in fines)

Plus you have to remove them and put the car back to stock.

But the weather is great 360 days out of the year.

Re: Federal crime in replacing unbroken Catalyst

Hmm, the weather is great? That is about all I can say for California. It didn't justify my staying after living there for 27 years.

Some of the high points of California...High house prices, high gas prices, pretentious women, pathetically strict vehicle codes, and a huge influx of illegal immigrants. Not to mention Shamifornia is of the few states where it is possible to earn six figures and still be living with your folks. (I could keeping going but won't.)

"Crummyfornians" can have it. Thanks but no thanks. No offense, but I don't see people flocking to California in droves. It appears to be just the opposite these days.

It was the biggest relief of my life (once I left California) to not feel like a goddamn outlaw for adding a few simply modifications to my car.

Re: Federal crime in replacing unbroken Catalyst

It's not just California. Federal law requires OEM cats until 50,000 miles. Beyond that, I think the distinction is that Fed law lets you swap it at 50,001, while CA law still requires proof of the OEM cat being damaged.

Gee officer, I had to replace my stock cats because they were destroyed by 104 racing gas that melted the insides.
