modify the stock airbox?

hey all, i disassembled me intake and noticed that the stock airbox goes into a lower tube. whats the purpose of that? i was thinking of creating a panel to cover that and lead air into the filter better. anyone try this?

also has anyone tried installing a Z intake box into a G? like the 06 airbox that has the upgraded velocity stack? or installed on of those stacks on a G?

I have done what you are proposing, but I did not cover the hole on the bottom. I have considered covering it, but have not got around to it yet. Regarding the velocity stack, I believe you could buy a 350z air box, remove the velocity stack and put it on your stock intake. I have considered doing that exact same thing, but have yet to buy an '06 350z air box. Check out the pics in the link below and you will see it appears to be held on by 4 screws.

Just noticed you have a coupe. If I am not mistaken, the 06-07 coupe has a velocity stack.

Nope, I never got around to taking pics. I am a professional procrastinator.

Don't cover it. There's no need. If anything it's allowing a tiny bit more air in.

That bottom opening leads to a consealed box, which acts as a helmholtz resonator to quiet down the intake noise.

Covering it or not won't really make any difference.

I ran my car for a long time (2 years maybe) with that resonator plugged off and I recently took the unplugged and I swear the intake is louder and the throttle response has improved. I seriously believe that resonator does something to help throttle response and it sure isn't there to quiet the intake down. That's for sure. I suggest you leave it alone.

no it's not even a tube, it's a closed bottle to reduce noise. i covered mine, since it can only create more heat through greenhouse effect. if possible, remove it entirely so that air can come in from underneath where it's cooler

Yeah, mine is removed entirely and [edit: and the hole that is left] is NOT covered. I know exactly what the OP is talking about. I removed all that crap myself. It's just a baffle, pointless to have in there.

I also removed the "padding" from behind the driver side bumper inlet so air rushes in through the lower bumper inlet.

i think if you hack off the bottom part of that baffle-bottle, would be a great start.. then just make a little extension to reach down behind the lower grill
