Re: Kinetix plenum installed & intake polished

Dan,

Same numbers. Kinetix sound is louder (reads more annoying to some people) and those people are taking steps to silence it with dyna-mat, etc... The Kinetix was designed for the 350Z and has a "seemingly obstructive" recess in it to clear the front tower bar in the 350Z (which we do not need for the G35). There is only one configuration of the Kinetix that you can order so you must live with this recess if you choose the Kinetix. Also, Crawford has color choices for an additional $20... but requires a core return to make the prices work out to be even.

Re: Kinetix plenum installed & intake polished

Just a couple of questions.

What is Kinetix's website?
Will the G35 engine cover fit over the Kintex Plenum?
Where can I get the carbon fiber 350Z engine cover?

neffster - I see that you have the crawford v5 plenum. Do you regret getting the crawford over the kinetix? Which one would you recommend in hindsight?

NO WAY!!!

Crawford wins hands down IMO. Here's why...

1. Crawford if MUCH stronger
2. Bottom half of plenum is cast aluminum (not plastic)
3. The Plastic Kinetix plenum has had cracking issues that I don't want to have to worry about. 4. The Crawford is designed specifically for the G35, the Kinetix is designed for the 350Z.
5. Crawford can come in black, red, blue, white, yellow and green.
6. No marketing logos on the Crawford, Kinetix has its logo molded into it (not sure if it's cast, molded, vacuum formed, etc...)
7. Crawford is cheaper (after you send back your core).
8. Kinetix sounds too loud for some people (I have never heard it myself). Some people are dynamatting the engine bay to silence it.
9. The Kinetix has an air flow obstruction that allows for the 350Z's front sway bar. Albeit, both plenums show equal gains on the dyno.

The only advantage of the Kinetix, is that you get to keep your core, but with the performance gain the plenum gives you, you'll NEVER put it back on again. Also, Doug told me that if I ever wanted my core back, he'd sell me one for $200 (pretty cool huh?).

Sorry if I offend any of the Kinetix owners. I also have the RT Cats, and most people hate them (but have NEVER heard them) so take this post for what it's worth.

Re: Kinetix plenum installed & intake polished

I wouldn't consider Kinetix until they take the time to mold one for the G.

If the problem really is front airflow restriction, why buy an aftermarket one that appears to have the same issue?

Re: Kinetix plenum installed & intake polished

So now that we're done talking about the "looks" of the crawford plenum, let's talk performance. Give us some detailed feedback onm performance gains.

Thanks a bunch

It's not the size of your engine.. it's how you use it!

I think your just fooling yourself if your getting a plenum for the performance gain. Same with any of the CAI's. Same with an exhaust mod.

Even with all of these your looking at maybe 20hp on a good day. At 6000rpm. And with some you're losing much loved low rpm torque.

Do them for the looks and the sound and be happy.

We'll have some performance numbers from Orlando dyno day next weekend. We have about 18 cars in various states of tune ready to go.

Re: Kinetix plenum installed & intake polished

There are plenty of dynos on my350z.com. I'm not going to try and estimate how much if any power change I got. I'm heading back to the same dyno that I got a baseline at some point.

I worked on porting out a small amount at the inlet of the intake runners on the lower plenum today. Here are some more pics.

Here's the lower plenum after some polishing from last time, but before porting.

And after porting. With some polishing. I didn't want to smooth out the runners entirely.

I also polished the intake manifold a bit more.

Last one. If the my350z people ever hold another dyno day at Strictly Dyno in Socal, I'll go. There's no point trying to dyno on a separate machine to compare changes. It'll be interesting to see if there are any changes.

Re: Kinetix plenum installed & intake polished

DED,
With a CAI, plenum, headers, & cats Crawford is claiming 20 HP at peak and 40 HP at redline with gains along the entire powerband. This is without a cat back exhaust. Do you think that's unreasonable, on an average day?

Boy DED you've really changed your tone from the first ride in my car with the intake, plenum and high flow cats. Remember how much wheel I caught going to second?

Anyway, I bet -fish will get about 15-18 rwhp with the cats and plenum. The headers will gain almost nothing (just a dumb guess). I've read replies where -fish was going to install the cats and plenum, then dyno. Then install the headers and then re-dyno. A few weeks have passed and he said he'd install the plenum and cats then do the G-Timer thing... install the headers and then re-do the G-Timer thing... NOW he has said he's going to get the cats and headers installed AT THE SAME TIME, losing any data point for a header alone gain.

I really wish this site had a "roll eyes" icon right about now...

Re: Kinetix plenum installed & intake polished

LOL, sorry Neff but once I figured Crawford was a 3 hour drive, my situation changed. I'm not going to spend $50 to put the cats on when Doug will do it free. And I figure since I'm already there, do the headers as well.

Why do you think the headers will do nothing? Have you seen our stock exhaust manifold? Eckkk. Heck even the Borla headers are worth 6-8 HP and those things look barely better than the stock manifold. Please enlighten me as talking me out of the headers would save me a good $1500.

My newly revised double secret probation plan is:
1) Ditch the JWT P/C and replace with Nismo CAI.
2) V5 Plenum (if it ever gets here)
3) Crawford cats/headers (together or I may still do them separately)
4) Nismo cat-back exhaust.
5) Cam, probably Nismo.
6) Technosquare ECU reflash if JWT doesn't have one out by then. (or should I be doing the ECU first?)
7) Try to restrain myself from going FI or NOS, I should be sufficiently broke by then anyway.

Bad plan Neff? Ditch the headers? Please elaborate. What Would Eagle 1 Do? (WWE1D?, lol)
