Filter media - Avoid!

Oiled cotton gauze is not, nor was it designed to be, an engine air intake filter media.

It is poor in terms of engine protection, dust hoding ability, efficiency and the restriction (power loss) is dramatic one loading (dirt) occurs. Has anyone here actually seen what's inside one of these filters? Why is the oil necessary?

Avoid any cotton gauze or foam filters in your G35!

If you're not sure what filters utilize this method of filtration, just ask.

I have an Amsoil DRY EA filter, works great, filters better than OEM and due to nano-weave, it "supposedly" flows better than OEM as well.
EDIT: supposedly - thanks PFE for clearing that up.

IMO, I'd never use a K&N. Oil + crap filtration masked/marketed as high air flow = harm to my engine over time. An extra 2hp isn't worth that to me.
You want power? Get a plenum spacer, get FI, but don't think a drop in K&N will give you worthwhile power at no cost.

I have checked my intake tube inside since I installed my Amsoil filter, it's clean as a whistle. I'm putting on my Z-tube this weekend, and have that cleaned out to basically new condition. I'll be keeping track of how clean it stays as well. I'm sure it will free up an extra 2hp as well, and I can guarantee you I won't notice it at all. The sound will change and that's fine with me, it'd be silly to think a Z-tube or filter would make any noticeable gains.

Amsoil

Hello stradaOne8

I have performed many lab tests on the Amsoil EA and the filtration performance is certainly better than any of the cotton gauze products. However, the restriction level of the Amsoil is very high. It was the most restrictive filter we have tested. The curve is almost identical to the OEM unit. Examining the microscopic media structure provides an explanation.

I'm glad you understand the marketing hype regarding the gauze products and the negative impact oil has on the engine management system.

Best of luck with the Z tube install.

PFE

Thanks PFE, I forgot to put, "supposedly" before flows better than OEM in my first post. I had no data, but hearsay told me that.
From a basic physics standpoint, I found that to be hard to believe as an increase in filtration almost always leads to a decrease in air flow...but again to me in that aspect, filtration > air flow for the most part.
Later on in the evolution of my car, I'm sure I'll add something different as I get bored of stock levels of power.
