Kinetix HFC install

Hey guys,

I got the Kinetix HFC's for my G coupe and im about to do this install myself. Now ive been getting mixed information about how much slack ill need coming down from inside the hood to the bolts on the cats. One person said 30 inchs while another only said ~20. I have 18.5 inchs of extention and a 14mm head that im going to use. Is this enough to reach in there? Or will I need more?

If anyone knows how much of an extention I need I would appreciate it along with any other information you guys got about this whole process.

After searching I couldnt find a DIY or a write up on this so maybe while im going along ill snap some pictures and throw a write up on the forum.

Thanks again in advance

Sorry I had another thread where people were posting more. Anyways I did my install ended up needing just about 26' ext if your gonna come through the engine bay. The 3 bolts on the passenger side I got from the engine bay and the rest I removed from under the car. On the driver side its very cramped and difficult to remove the bolts. I got lucky and my neighbor had an air racket which made the process go a lot quicker and easier. The two gaskets up top I reused and I got new gaskets from my local Nissan dealership for the bottom half of the HFC's (dont think I really needed them but they looked rusted over so I replaced them just to be safe) What really held up my install was the threads going bad on my O2 sensors. It was a major PITA to get them out. I actually had to order a new sensor for the driver side it was so bad and will probably be replacing my passenger side too in not to long. No pictures, sorry.

07, thanks for the update.

I picked up a 350z HR Y pipe today and am about to have it installed sometime tomorrowish.

Anyway I wanted to do my HFCs as well in the next couple weeks and just wanted to know how your car drives now with the Kinetix units.

Also, at what part in your power band, do you notice performance gains? (Please explain)

How has your gas mileage been since you upgraded your Cats and do they smell?

Thanks in advance

Mike-

My car runs great with the kinetix, even tho ive had the 02 sensor problem ever since the install. As far as the power band, I feel it in every RPM. Its more better throttle response than overall power. It feels sharper and not as sluggish (more free flowing id say due to the fact thats what they are designed to do ) you can feel them the most at mid range I suppose if you really wanna narrow it down. My buddy with a 05 G rode in my car and when I punched it mid power band (roughly 3500 to 4k rpm) I felt a stronger kick on the butt dyno. Keep in mind these arnt drastic changes but still something I can tell changed after being inside stock G's for so long now. As far as smell theres a slight to no smell what so ever. I sometimes think i smell something but I believe its just the cats breaking in since they were brand new because I havnt smelled anything since the first couple of days after the install. My gas milage has held the same for the most part. If anything ive actually gained a few mpg which sounds kinda weird but on avg. I was getting just about 125 mpg per half tank. Yesterday I checked and I was already at 150 miles after half a tank! I really dont have any complaints about kinetix besides the fact they had no instructions they dont come with gaskets and they didnt give me enough bolts to install the cats and I ended up using 2 of the old bolts from the stock cats to compelte the install.

try and get a sound clip of that Y pipe, ive been thinking of getting one

P.S. My buddy stood outside my car as I reved to let him hear the difference between his 05 and my 07 and told me he saw a blue flame shoot out of my tail pipe

A blue flame WTF lol

Thanks for the quick response 07. I'll definately get a sound bite over the weekend. Its going to warm up to 50 ish here so I'm excited about the mod upgrade already!

I'm going to find some muffler shop nearby that can help me with the install tomorrow. I'll try to grab some sound bites right afterward.

You're right about the midrange. That's where our cars like to play the most right around 3-4.5K RPM or so

I can't wait. How much did you grab those Cats for? And when you say smell, is it something you notice from inside the car or outside?

Also when you turn the power off, do you hear those tiny tick,.... tick sounds or do they go away with the HFCs?

I got my cats for $320 shipped brand new in a group buy here on driver not to long ago. As far as the smell it was only from behind the car near the exhaust tips, nothing inside. Oh and those tiny ticking sounds you are hearing is oil dripping into the oil pan in your car
