Idle is dropping like crazy, car feels like its almost gona give up.
Hey guys i just put a new md, and design chaos spacer. my idle has been acting super weird. it feels like my car is almost gona shut off. what procdures do i need to do to get back my idle to spec? Im getting a tune as well. should i just tell my tuner to bump up my idle? will that help. Do you think i have a leak?
|
Sounds like a vacuum leak. What kind of gasket did you use to install the spacer?
Edit: In your original post, did you say you put two spacers in???? |
yea design chaos throttle body spacer, and md 5/16 spacer. i kept the stock gasket for my md spacer. When i removed the throttle body, i didnot find a gasket for that. im thinking that might be the problem
|
Is the md spacer new or used?
|
its new
|
So there are gaskets between both the top and bottom of the md spacer? Stock on one side and the md on the other.
One thing you might look at is if you tightened the spacer with the rubber thing around the oil fill spout. That has been known to get caught when installing a spacer. |
i put the stock gasket underneath the md spacer. There is no gasket on top of it. btw is there a way to see where the leak is coming from?
|
You unplug your TB connector when you put that spacer in? yes = idle relearn procedure needed.
If you have a leak in the plenum spacer, you'd know it the instant the car was started. ie.. a loud shreek noise. |
yea i performed the idle realearn procedure a couple of times, and it still has weird idle. im jus gona try doin it a couple more times

Need a gasket on the throttle body. Did that spacer have an o-ring on one side of it?
|
yea the spacer had the two O rings on each side. Do you know what the stock gasket lloks like, cause i didnt see one. i think that might be a problem

I had the same prob Viv when i installed my 1/2" spacer Didnt torque down the long bolts in the center of the manifold enough, had a leak , torqued it , problem solved.By the way you ready for another one?

But yeah, you probably have a slight vacuum leak somewhere. |
Had the same issue... after installing spacer... i forgot to reconnect a vaccum hose.. check all your hoses.. even the one on the passanger side of the plenum... thats the one i forgot...
|
Yea i will defintely check out if i left any hoses as well. Im thinkin it is a leak, i just dont know where the leak is coming from

well there are 3 spots on the throttle body..make sure the hose is connected up top on the back side of it..on the bottom side of the plenum and then the coolant hose that runs into the plenum.....then on the left side of the plenum you have the large hose..make sure thats plug in. After that I would suggest to hand torque the bolts down on the plenum. use your opposite hand or non-dominant hand to tighten down the bolts. That acts ast the correct torque down specs pretty much.
|
the throttle body spacer you installed should have gasket on the back-side connecting to the plenum and one in between the spacer and the throttle body. you should have 2 gasket in between the spacers....the first gasket is the one that is bolted down when you remove the middle bolts inside the plenum the is between the lower plenum and spacer. then your second gasket is what MD should of supplied which goes in between the spacer and the upper plenum. Make sure the bolts are torqued down...i didnt do the idle reset on my car when I installed it.

the TBS he is using does not require gaskets - each side has an o-ring.
I've had this issue after cleaning the throttle body because the butterfly valve was moved... the accelerator position learning procedure followed by the throttle position learning procedure followed by idle learning procedure should correct the erratic idle. It does take a few attempts to get it to take. |
My vote is with the gaskets. The o-rings on a used TB spacer may not be reliable. Mine came with gaskets that I use. No problems with the spacer at all.
He said he's tried the idle relearn a few times already too... |

+1 on this. If you moved the throttle plate at all this is your issue. I will bet the farm on it.
|
I just got done installing my plenum. I cleaned my TB while I was in there. Mine idles just fine and I moved the plate more than a few times. But I never unplugged the connector.

If you are still having problems tracking down the leak, the method I've always used is to (carefully) start spraying a bit of starting fluid around the suspect areas (a little at a time) while the car is running. When the engine races, you've found your leak.
|
Just be careful using that method. Don't spray too much.
|
you could try cleaning the mass air flow sensor with some MAF cleaner (a spray chemical) or maybe replace the air filter on the intake
|
thanks some really good advise guys. im gona try all of them.
|
what kind of starting fluid do i need to get?
