WTF is up with y-pipes
Hey guys,
I bought 3 HR Y-pipes this week from the local stealership and I have a couple of questions. I have read all 32 pages of DaveB's thread and am still confused with what I've got.
I got 2 distinctly different types of pipes:
2 of them have tubes on the cat side that have a diameter of 1.75 inches wide inside. The tube going to the midpipe is 2.50 inches wide inside and the distance from the y merge to the connector (at the midpipe side) is 11".
1 has the cat side tubes measuring 2" inside, but 2.25" on the midpipe side. The distance from the y merge to the connector is only 9".
So you see why I am like WTF!! One has larger intake pipes but a smaller outlet pipe, and the other set are just the opposite. I don't have a clue which one is "better" but was curious what you all think. I'm keeping the second one and I believe the other 2 are sold (1 definitely sold, waiting for confirmation on the 2nd).
Let me know your thoughts. I'd post pics, but that's the last thing on here I haven't figured out how to do yet.

From the information I have gathered, there are a total of 5 different style stock Y pipes for the DE and HR. Feel free to correct me if anything I have here is wrong and I'll edit this post. All measurements are ID.
1. The stock DE Y pipe.
2. The updated DE Y pipe, found on some G35x's.
3. The 350z HR Y pipe.
4. The G37/370z Y pipe.
5. The '07 G35 sedan HR Y pipe.
Below is a picture of the original DE Y pipe. 2" inlets and 2.35" - 2.45" outlet.

Below is a pictue of the updated DE Y pipe. No vibration dampners, and I'm not sure of the inlet/outlet diamters. I would guess 2" inlet, 2.5" outlet, but if someone is sure of the correct sizes let me know and I'll edit this post.

Below is a picture of the 350Z HR Y pipe. I thought it measured 2" at the inlet from the cats and 2.5" at the midpipe and has vibration dampners. You will gain low end perfromance, better shifting and better sound from this Y pipe. See DaveB's thread for multiple reviews https://g35driver.com/forums/intake-...-2003-g35.html

Below is a picture of the G37/370z Y pipe. It measures 1.75" at the inlet from the cats and 2.5" at the midpipe and has vibration dampners. I am currently using this Y pipe. I am experiencing similar gains others have experienced with the 350z HR Y pipe, despite this Y having smaller 1.75" inlets.

Below is a picture of the HR G35 sedan Y pipe. As you can see it has vibration dampners, I would guess that this has 2" inlets and a 2.5" outlet because it's used on the VQ35HR. If someone has them please post and I'll edit this to include the info.

Also, while on the topic of Y pipes, here is a link to compares the aftermarket Y's http://www.350z-tech.com/zwiki/Y_Pipes

This is so confusing. My 07 HR 350Z y-pipe has 2" inlets and nearly a 2.45" outlet. I believe the DE outlet was fractionally smaller (2.35"?). I'll measure it again tonight. I made damn sure I wasn't installing a pipe with smaller tubes. If that was the case, I would have never installed the HR y-pipe.
Great thread. I'm in the market for a Y-pipe. I have an 03 sedan with a Greddy cat back exhaust- any reccomendations on what to get? Looking for nice sound, some low end power, and not to heavy on the wallet.

If your exhaust isn't true dual the I'd say look at an HR Y pipe or the Motordyne XYZ pipe. Now that's one I'm curious to find out about also
Here are some clips of my car with my HR Y pipe, Berk HFCs and stock exhaust....
IMO, HFCs+ HR Y Pipe+ stock exhaust = sex. I'm sure that test pipes make them sound good too.

Is the exhaust sound noticeably deeper going from the DE coupe y pipe to the 350Z HR y pipe?
I'm prob picking 1 up this week and wanted to see if it was worth the drive.

All I am sure of is the stock y pipe on my sedan looks like more of a T as shown in dave's comparo pic of the z y pipe and the DE pipe. All of the pipes I got have brackets for the pucks, but no pucks. Based on chris12's pics they are definitely not what he shows in the last pic. One is exactly like the pic of the G37/370z pipe, but has no pucks. The other has longer down tubes and a neck leading to the midpipe outlet that is 2" shorter than the G37 pipe. ( 9' compared to 11") This pipe also has 2 brackets holding the heatshields together between where the pucks should be and the merge, which none of the one's in chris' pictures have.
I have read that the longer the downtubes the better, that's one of the reasons the original DE tube is inferior. It's downtubes look like little stubby arms. If anyone would let me know how to post pics, or would be willing to host them for me let me know. It's easier to see what I'm talking about than me trying to explain it.

Thanks eurodre,
This helps show what I was talking about. Note that both pipes have the bolts for the pucks. Also, note that the pipe on the right has 2 brackets holding the heatshields together between the puck bolts and the merge. I don't believe we've had a pic of that pipe posted yet in this or daveB's thread. chris12 maybe there are 6?
So confusing.....

Absolutely possible, I was more or less consolidating the information from DaveB's now 31 page thread in my post.
But, to me the one on the left looks like a G37 Y with the dampners removed and the one on the right looks like a G35 sedan HR Y minus the pucks. This would also be consistent with the info above, because it looks like the one on the left has the smaller inlets, while the inlets on the Y to the right appear to be closer to 2". This is just an observation and I could be way off here.
