exhaust break in period?
exhaust break in period?
Is there such a thing? I've heard at a couple places that a new exhaust takes a month or two to break in, and afterwords it will get a bit louder. Is this true? I just installed a Magnaflow y pipe back exhaust and I am not really happy with it because it sounds just like stock and is not noticeably louder.
I just ordered a Megan y pipe and I am hoping this will help with the sound??
Should I get some test pipes or wait to see if it breaks in?

coupe. I have to really listen closely if I want to see how it is different from stock. The only noticeable difference is that it drones when I'm cruising in 5th or 6th gear

It should be completely broken in in about 1000 miles of driving. The fiberglass packing that is stuffed into the mufffler case is soaked in a varnish or hair spray like substance.
This hair spray like substance is used to help make handling during the manufacturing process easier and safer.
It makes handling easier because the fiberglass strands stick together and conglomerrate so fiberglass particles don't go flying all over the place during the manufacturing process.
When you drive your car, the varnish like substance is burned off the fiberglass and all the fibers become free from eachother and become better able to attenuate sound waves.
A break in will only make the muffler quieter... not louder.
