y pipe issue

So trying to get how the exhaust system really works here, basically its bigger piping more power because it eliminated the back pressure. But say our OEM stock has wat 2.25" piping and we get a new y pipe that has a 2.5"-3" outlet. So that extra room is pretty much pointless cause the mid pipe isnt capable to handling that extra space correct?? ANYONE. So if i have an exhaust that has 2.5" piping from the mid pipe and on, to maximize my power gains i would also want a y pipe that has a 2.5" outlet? Im kind of confused why people are buying after market exhaust and than adding the HR y pipe which has a 2.25" outlet but most of these after market exhaust hav 2.5"+ pipes...i guess HR does give a deeper tone tho. And also i guess where the y pipe merge and how long the down pipe and etc makes a diff but essentially you want the y pipe outlet to match the size of the mid pipe input?
