Advanced Resonance Tuning (ART Pipes)

7 Attachment(s)
In my days as a rocket scientist designing the R-4D-16 dual mode rocket engine for JPL there were all kinds of challenges in ensuring the performance and reliability of the rocket engines.

One of the greatest challenges was designing an injector to produce smooth and stable combustion of the fuel and oxidizer in the combustion chamber. There were occasionally these acoustic instabilities (tangential modes) in the combustion chamber that could be excited and start a run away condition that could quickly destroy the engine. To address this problem I used Helmholtz resonators inside the rocket engine to damp out the acoustic tangential modes. A tangential mode is basically a shockwave that would spin around the inner circumference of the combustion chamber analogous to a supersonic tornado at 20K Hz. Not unlike detonation, this tangential mode would scrub off the boundary layer, radically increase the heat transfer into the chamber walls and result in a catastrophic failure.

Helmholtz resonators were the solution to these tangential waves. By properly tuning the Helmholtz resonator to the frequency of the tangential mode you could either magnify or eliminate the shockwave.

These can be used on a fully modified exhaust system to make additional power. Traditionally, if you already have an intake mod, headers, test pipes with a full catback exhaust and tune, that was the end of the line. There was no more left to gain. ...But not any more.

This is Motordyne's debut of the patent pending Advanced Resonance Tuning (TM).

They're not headers. They're not conventional test pipes. They're ART pipes!

The plot below is without exhaust cam phase tuning. The ART pipes respond very well to cam tuning.;)

Regular test pipes always result in a large loss of low end torque. Compared to test pipes, the ART pipes produce a large gain in low end torque that is clearly felt and can be very usable for auto-cross or powerful launches in drag racing.

Although these ART pipes are designed and tuned for power they greatly reduce rasp, drone and loudness.

wow those look amazing!

SxExCx Feb 10, 2010 12:37 AM

I cant wait to hear them in person!

SxExCx Feb 10, 2010 12:42 AM

What is the different between the 3 samples shown?

EDIT: Dynos!

Wow, you weren't kidding about a different design!

Invalid_User Feb 10, 2010 02:34 AM

Ok so wait, this replaces the Cats?

I mean good thinking and design but 660 for 5hp?

Silencer_0 Feb 10, 2010 02:37 AM

^ I think that's 5-6 HP on top of what regular tp's make, whatever that may be.

Invalid_User Feb 10, 2010 02:43 AM

Ooo ok

5 extra HP for 660

Silencer_0 Feb 10, 2010 02:45 AM

Mhmm. Obviously this is for those who wanna squeeze out all the HP they can out of their parts lol.

gabe3d Feb 10, 2010 03:20 AM

You guys gotta think about how much more often you are in the 3k range as oppose to peak HP at redline. This will make your car much more enjoyable then mods that add 20whp at the end.

Silencer_0 Feb 10, 2010 03:33 AM

^ Yeah, that's what I like about these. I'd jump on them if I didn't mind the fumes and increased volume.....

Marinelli Motorsports Feb 10, 2010 06:57 AM

Wow those are pretty amazing...

Good job on design Tony!:biggthumpup:

bluemax189 Feb 10, 2010 09:02 AM

wow, i understand all the r&d you guys put into your products, but thats 660 and no catalysts in them at all? seems a little high for the extra 5 hp over the 150$ testpipes. i guess if your trying to get every last bit out of the car this is it. How does it respond to forced induction. i know test pipes can add 20-25 hp over the stock cats just because it frees up the exhaust so much. curious what to see these would gain over the stock cats on a FI vehicle

Hydrazine Feb 10, 2010 09:27 AM

The cost is based on the manufacturing materials and labor. They are a lot more complicated to make than regular test pipes. And they are entirely made in So. Cal. USA.

As for performance on FI, we will have to wait for the independent dynos.
