Keep exhaust tone but make it sound mean how?

I have a coupe with a ztube and p/c. I wanna keep my car kinda sounding the same cause everyone knows the distinct sound of a g35/fx. i liked how the p/c + ztube made it sound MEAN at the top of gears and WOT. I want that same kind of result. Same sound only louder. I want it to rumble at idle a litlte more and now be too noticeable while cruising... but when i womp on it i want it sounding mean.

i was thinking about just replacing the Y-pipe cause i kind of want to keep the stock looking exhaust.... but if i go full catback i was thinking of something like injen. money isnt a BIG deal.... dont wanna spend more than like 1200 tho

2004 Black on Black g coupe 6spd.... aluminum pedals, clear corners, z tube, and pop charger. soon to have 19" volk gt-c's and PIAA xtreme whites in the clearance and corners

Raz if your looking for a pretty much stock looking and sounding exhaust just deeper go for the Nismo or Stillen cat-back exhaust, i think the Nismo is more what your looking for!! The Borla exhaust is also great, ive heard them all.

I would check the Fujitsubo exhaust as * to me * it sounds the meanest while still keeping it civilized. Has nice law rumble at idle.

I had your setup with a borla exhaust on top of it for a while. Sounded awesome. I'd say get the borla exhaust. It'll give you a nice rumble at lower rpm's and an incredible growl when you reach the upper rpm's.

If you want even louder, get cats as well. I got R/T ones, and all hell broke lose

Would just having a Y pipe with the stock exhaust make a difference in sound?
Can I have the Y pipe with a after market axle back exhaust system

Re: Keep exhaust tone but make it sound mean how?

I am interested in a set-up that will not be excessively loud. I used to own a 99 Mustang GT with magnaflow hi flow cats and exhaust and you can hear that **** from 2 blocks away.

Any advice here is appreciated.

Re: Keep exhaust tone but make it sound mean how?

I just installed a Y pipe and am VERY pleased w/ the sound. Just slightly louder then stock but keeps the stock tone 100%. I Love it! and as far as power gains are concerned. I don't believe their is much to be gained from the Y-pipe but I feel a difference and the first two days I had it I was able to chirp the tires on the 1st to 2nd gear change at WOT using manumatic . Which I haven't been able to do in a while. However I believe my ECU has adjusted as I couldn't do it today (not sure? was also alot warmer today)

I am sure the gain is not as much as a whole aftermarket system but I never planned to go aftermarket as I love the sound of the stock exhaust. So the Y-pipe is a perfect option. I have also read posts by Jason at performance nissan (my350z.com) and he says most gains are seen from the y-pipe (aside from cats, test pipes).

Also I got my Y-pipe from e-bay for $220 Its exactly the same as others that cost more money. Made by OBX who are notorious for just copying other companies designs but since its just a pipe, does it real matter? I don't think you would see a real world difference. The installer who I met at the drag races and owns a custom exhuast shop said the it was very well made. Just make sure if you get a y-pipe that it has flex points on it.

Before you buy anything, if you just want to change the sound, try removing the resonator.

For not a lot of money, you can replace the heavy stock rear muffler with the Greddy SP2.
I love mine and it sounds great.

First of all this thread is over 5 years old!

Yes FI test pipes will add a deeper sound to your exhaust and free up about 5HP
