Re: K&N filter?

I'm probably going to pick one up too, when it's time to change mine.. mainly for the reusability, though.

Re: K&N filter?

My concern is the extra "dirt" that a K&N lets into the engine over the stock paper element. To me more dirt equates to greater wear, so since I'm attempting to get about 6-7 years and over 200K miles out of my G, I'd like to stay away from anything that might affect engine life negatively. Stilllurking the BITOG site to see what they say, and what their various tests reveal.

If I knew I'd be changing cars before 100K, I wouldn't hesitate to install it.

Re: K&N filter?

I'm thinking about switching to a K&N, moving to synthetic oil, and adding a bypass filter (which takes care of the more dirt problem with room to spare).

ryoken,

I've heard mention of a bypass filter before... what exactly is this? Any links or pics I can view?

Re: K&N filter?

The standard oil filter in a car engine is called a "full-flow" filter. As it filters, the oil travels through it quickly, so that it can return to the engine to keep things lubricated. As a result, 15-20 microns is about the smallest size particle it can filter out. There's even a bypass valve that opens up if/when the filter clogs that allows oil to run through it w/o being filtered (unfiltered oil is better than no oil) -- but that usually only happens if you neglect your oil change for too long with a cheap filter.

Most long-term engine wear is caused by smaller particles, in the 5-10 micron range. A bypass filter is a second oil filter with a much finer filter element. It can filter out these fine particles, but it cannot flow oil very quickly. You install it in parallel to the regular oil filter, basically a small oil line tees off, runs through the bypass filter's fine element, and returns to the main system. This pulls smaller particles out of circulation, and also helps with running extended oil drains, as generally you change the oil to get rid of these contaminants -- some synthetic oils can go 15k+ miles (or more) if they're kept clean.

Re: K&N filter?

This is quite funny actually,

There are very few cases where a stock replacement K&N actually increases HP.

If you think you can tell an increase in HP by driving it, then its all in your head, and a few MPG is just in your driving patterns.

Unless you show me a dyno sheet back to back vs the stock filter, i will not believe it.

Dont get me wrong, K&N are great filters, but if you are looking for power, look somewhere else.

Re: K&N filter?

i agree its very unlikly that u will see any HP gains over the stock and if u do it will be less then 1/2 a hourse and less then 1/2 mpg at best.

Re: K&N filter?

Yes it is more restrictive, yes oil will pass thru it, but more slowly.. which is why it runs in parallel (and in addition to) your main, full-flow filter, NOT instead of. So on each pass through the engine, a little bit of the oil gets the better filtering, and about every 5 minutes or so, all the oil has managed to pass through the bypass filter.

Re: K&N filter?

It's partially relevant.

It's not so restrictive that no oil will go through it, plus I imagine the oil pressure at that point in the system helps a bit.

Re: K&N filter?

Pardon my ignorance:

If you look on K&N's site you see two air filters for the G35, cartridge and non-cartridge. Whassup with that?

G35 Coupe w/ K&N CAI
Re: K&N filter?

There is a back to back Dyno sheet not just of a K&N vs. stock, but BY K&N. I had my Coupe down at their factory for prototyping of their CAI intake system which will be out sometime soon, & I scanned & posted the Dyno results, as we also ran tests of the paper stock vs a drop in OEM fit K&N, on different runs as opposed to the CAI Dyno runs they did... I will post the link for it here...

That thread went on forever too, there's like 69 replies to it or something... But the scans of the Dyno runs are in there.... They showed an average gain in the averages not peaks, of about 5 to 7 HP.
