exhaust cutouts. bad for engine?
thinking of getting exhaust cutouts. couldnt find the answer to this question anywhere. if they are installed before the cats will it harm the engine at all when being used? or is it better to install them closer to the muffler?
Out of curiosity why do you want cutouts?
But before the cats could definitely harm the engine, since naturally aspirated engines need *some* backpressure. After the Cats would be better but I still wouldn't suggest it. You will likely make less power with that setup than a well designed cat back exhaust since it is possible to reach a point of not enough backpressure (where it loses power) with some exhaust systems available (ones intended for FI).
I would recommend just saving up and buying a reputable cat back exhaust, APS, Stillen, Greddy, HKS etc. And if your really just looking for that open header sound, Go TT with open dumps

For a turbo charged FI set up, the best exhaust would be a dump straight off the turbo with a slightly enlarging diameter. (Roughly 8-12in long)
However, more important than backpressure is exhaust velocity. The velocity lost by having an open dump would severely affect performance, especially at low RPM. (Think putting your thumb over a hose)
The only cutout I would suggest would be either to dump through the side skirt near the rear wheel (Impossible without heavy modding) or to have cutouts that by pass the cats back into the exhaust.
The ECU would not like the bypass method, as a constantly changing o2 reading would most likely result in occasional limp mode engagements.
The best place to put a cut out is where the resonator is in the stock mid pipe. The cut out does ad a bit of restriction though, keep that in mind.

appreciate the input. not very knowledgeable when it comes to FI and exhaust and ECU ect. I was just slightly considering cutouts so i would have the option of going back to the stock sound whenever i wanted (like coming back from the bar at 2:30 so i dont **** off the neighbors) but after reading this I will probably end up going with a motordyne exhaust, to me it sounds best and maybe ART pipes if they arent too raspy
