how good is the oem exhaust?
ive read a few threads about it but nothing truly conclusive. in my other thread i mention going back to stock exhaust.
i have an 03 5at coupe with mods:
z tube, port/polish manifold and runners, cobb accessport tune, stillen/RT high flow cats
and currently an xo2 exhaust.
i like the stock tone better though and also it will reduce noise a little.
i figure the oem exhaust should be fine.(y pipe, mid and muffler) its 2.5" and should be sufficient for my mods. i am done modding and have actually parted out most of my things. so this is how i plan to leave it.
any thought and opinions about the oem exhaust being too restrictive? i dont care about gaining 5hp up top with a larger exhaust if thats all its worth.
i read the cats are the most restrictive part and i figure itll give me a little louder than stock sound but keep the same note and still be ok for my needs.
thanks in advance

Cats and OEM y-pipe are restrictive.
If your going back to stock, I'd suggest finding an HR-y-pipe instead of the DE y-pipe.
I went from the x02 to stock about 3-4 times. I don't have conclusive dyno evidence, but I have no doubt in my mind that there was a noticeable difference after 4k rpm. Def noticed less pull with OEM.
If your not too concerned about all out power, you'll be fine. I actually prefer the OEM sound with aftermarket cats or ART pipes.

bought an aftermarket hr style y pipe with 3" out. hopefully it sounds good and doesnt rasp..
so my new exhaust setup so far is:
stillen/RT high flow cats
aftermarket HR style Y pipe
stock midpipe
stock muffler
on the intake side i am running oem airbox, ztube, 5/16 MD spacer, port and polished oem manifold and runners.
still debating on possible muffler replacement.
what gives the g35 the "warble" sound? i like the stock note

Different sizes in piping and resonators change the frequency of the sound. I'm not an engineer but there's a lot of R&D put into the intake/exhaust systems by auto manufacturers to create a certain exhaust note on some cars. You have to find the right combo.
