By "staight pipe" I will assume you are talking about removing the catalytic converters.

1. Its illegal and won't pass emissions.
2. You're probably going to be able to smell gas and other nasty stuff when at idle because the cats aren't there to burn it up.
3. You might get a "sevice engine soon light".
4. IMO it does not sound good unless the test pipes are resonated. A lot of this is personal preference but I do not want a loud, raspy sound or any droning during highway cruising.

Do some searches for "test pipes" or the alternative "high flow cats". You should get plenty of results.

When everyone says raspy, do they mean like V8 raspy? I want an exhaust to sound as close to a V8 with a flowmaster as possible. I know it will never sound exact, but that is the type of sound I'm after. I like the stock exhaust sound too, but wish it was a little deeper and louder

Open pipes on any motor just sounds like crap IMHO. Think big lawn mower type sound. At idle it will sound cool, anything else will be painfull.

Somewhere on freshalloy their is a movie posting that let's you listen to a oem coupe before and after it get's straight piped. Sound's horrible, it's one mod that should not be done to these cars.

How about high flow cats, do they add a nice sound? I want the performance gain, but don't want to sound like I have a fart can or ricey. I want that mustang v8 sound with flowmasters!

you can never get the sound of a v8 with flowmasters...cause we dont have a v8 engine. I'm thinking that you're talking about that nice burble that the small blocks have at idle? Can't say much about hi-flow cats but once I install my test pipes with resonators, I'll write up a post about my thoughts. =)

I know that it will never sound the same, but was just giving that as an example of what I would like it to sound like. Post back here when you review the test pipes. I'm subscribed to this thread, so I won't miss the post.

have u had experience with backfires or have u read of backfires occuring on the g after test pipes are installed. If that is in anyway true, i will think twice before ordering them. i dont mind the sound or the fact that they are illegal. but if the car could backfire i dont think i would buy them.

Very simple. Test pipes -> no cats -> unburnt fuel -> backfires (maybe even fireballs )

I run test pipes and a TT setup and backfire on a daily basis. The fuel that is igniting is already past the motor and on it's way out anyway. It just ignites on its way out the exhaust and "pops." It's not like this loud gunshot sounding OMG we're going to die type deal. Is it unsafe....NO. The amount of unburnt fuel is very very small, and if sh** real hit the fan you are above solid steel. I'm pretty sure it won't like blow up your drivers seat. This is nothing to fear. I am more worried about chillin at idle for too long and smelling that crap. That's the worst part is the smell.

Test Pipes are not for the faint of heart, personally I love the loudness, the smell goes away and is not that noticable (just keep your windows up at red lights) and the power is freakin amazing.
