Question on exhaust gaskets

When changing the exhaust gaskets should you remove any rust from the mating surfaces? I will be removing the mid pipe to drop out the rear diff and will replace the gaskets for the hell of it.

I dont see why it would do any harm. Like you said since you are taking the midpipe out might as well.
