Mid Pipe Issues
Ok this thing is great but since I haven't been driving much lately, it has up until recently gone unnoticed that the pipe is banging like all hell on the drive axle loop and maybe the heat shield.
I had the guy that installed it push the heat shield up at the lowest spot as to bend it all the way along the area that comes close to the pipe and he torqued the axle loop up an inch or so... but dammit it's banging still!
Oddly it only bangs at lower speeds and at higher speeds there is little noise even over uneven surfaces.
Ideas, thoughts....

When I had the Coupe midpipe installed onto my car, the muffler shop guy thought these parts touching the new midpipe would cause it to rattle, so he removed the heat shield and modified the crossbar (directly under the driveshaft, but more toward the front of the car) by shortening it (he cut it and welded it back on to its brackets) and then reattached the crossbar so it doesn't touch the midpipe's resonator.
The install would have taken 25 min. but the stock heat shield (directly under the driveshaft) and the small crossbar (again, directly under the driveshaft, but more toward the front of the car) were slightly in the way of the new Coupe midpipe (they were both actually just barely touching the new midpipe).
I have absolutely no rattles or banging, so I'd say you may want to remove the heat shield and if necessary, redo it the way I've described above.

Sounds like your also saying he bend the closest hander too in order to make it hang lower in that spot. We're talking about a heat sheild on the coupe mid pipe itself, right?
If so, I'd uninstall the mid pipe and remove this heat sheild altogether. One fix that my shop did was to move the exhaust over on a couple of the hangers and then tack weld a washer onto the hanger, keeping the system snugged up to that side of the hanger. When I need to drop any part of the system, I just unbolt the hander assemblies themselves. Worked for me, dunno just thinking out loud.

I remember you did this from way back but the original install left about 1.5 inches of clearance and the pipe really didn't seem to move that much as to hit the cross member (which I believe you are referring to the thing that would catch the drove axle if it fell out). I guess flexing of the chassis makes it more prone to contact than it appears under the car. I wonder about taking that heat shield out? It may also be for aerodynamics?
The muffler shop guy didn't think it was necessary (although he wasn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed
). You can try removing the heat shield and see if the issue is resolved; as long as you can get under the car ok, it's just a few bolts. Also, you may be right...it may be more for aerodynamics than reducing heat anyhow.

I wish I could get under my loaner to see what they did on the 05 to overcome this issue. Probably a whole different shaped tube.

What do you mean? Is the 2005 heat shield in a different place?
