plenum upgrade time 2003 coupe 6mt

Opinions/hard data.. snarky comments?

Looking at Kinetix V+ plastic upper plenum.. I'm assuming this is thicker as well, and accomodates the same function as just adding a spacer with the additional phenolic non heat retaining qualities? or am I wrong?

or the MD 5/16" Iso Therm spacer... with stock upper plenum.

2003 6mt, long tube headers, y pipe, exhaust, K&N Typhoon intake, lightened flywheels and St2 clutch. Will be dyno'd and e-tuned with Osisris.

Looking for max low/mid range power. I rarely get the car over 80 mph and like to squirt the car thru commuter/tourist traffic, always keeping it in the power band.

Osisris is purchased but no tuning done yet. not even base. Stock tune right now but changing that soon.

Plenum spacer + stock plenum...done. It's been tested and proven for a decade as the best bang-for-the-buck option.

Keep in mind plenum mods aren't going to do much for low-mid range power in this car. You'll notice a bit more power up above 4750/5000 RPM, but you won't notice an increase below that, or least not enough to write home about. Though 10 years has passed, aftermarket companies move on to other motors/platforms as this one is no longer the latest and greatest, and the VQ has been milked pretty well over the years, unless you go FI, which is a whole other discussion.

I'm not expecting huge gains just finishing the air flow restrictions into and out of the motor and the tune will be fine on this car. I haven't even looked into what the final hp number should be, I just know how I like the powerband to feel and where it should be. I think the MD spacer in 5/16 will fit my needs

The 5/16 has done me well and the throttle boy bypass supposedly helps out a bit .

How exactly does the bypass help? I have it as well but haven't gone around to installing. Winter has me lazy.

Back to original topic, the 5/16th spacer is your best bet. And from the reviews in our club, it increases power throughout the band. Everyone I've asked said it's a night and day difference.

There's a dyno sheet available with the gains against other plenum mod equivalents. The MD spacer comes out on top out of all of them.

There's also the 1/2 spacer but that focuses more on the top end of the band, but not by a large amount. Both have its purpose.

Without having one (tb spacer/bypass) I can tell you that it works by diverting the flow of hot coolant from the throttle body fittings, which are intended to warm the incoming air. Warm air is the enemy of making more power.

I finally base tuned my coupe on Osiris the other day. I'm impressed on just that improvement. Can't wait to get the spacer and a real tune.

i think the plastic v-plenum is actually pretty good its just there have been reports of it straight up cracking. the idea behind it is good. i would love to see a full plastic upper and lower plenum like the hr.
