Y-Pipes: Are They really worth it? What are your experiences?

I have the UTR Y-pipe and I can definitely tell the car breathes more but I dont know if it is just me or does the low end suffer? I am considering putting my stock back on and spend the money elsewhere, but I wanted to know other peoples experiences with y-pipes. notice any benefits? was it worth the few hundred dollars you spent on it?

UTR said they posted a dyno on here somewhere at one point, but I cannot find it.

A few things I have noticed:

1) normal daily launches arent as smooth (a little bog)
2) acceleration was smoothed out (if thats what you want)
3) sound actually got softer and a tad deeper.

I am likely talking myself into selling it soon, but I would very much appreciate any input or feedback from others with one or have knowledge on the matter.

I dont think it's your y pipe that is the problem.

Ya, I think that because you are losing back pressure and the its more free flowing, you lose some hp and tq down low, but you get it back at the top. Just like installing high flow cats or a true dual exhaust. Look into getting a non-true dual, mid-pipe back exhaust like the Fujitsubo or HKS Legamax if you don't want to lose any power through the rpm range.

I got one of the Megan Racing y-pipe for $140, just thought I'd give it a try. Can't say I notice much gain or lost. Sound wise I'm sure it's louder after 3,500rpm but I can't tell b/c my spacer and z-tube is too loud.

The mid-pipe sits after the y-pipe and before the muffler.

I put on the JIC Y-pipe several months back. I noticed that there was an increase in midrange power between 2500-4500rpm. I have an auto and I noticed that I didn't have the push as hard on the gas to pass the slower moving vehicles. Didn't even have to downshift.

I had a UT-R Y-pipe (sold) and went back to stock for the reasons you mentioned. The gain is so minimal that it's not worth the money. The gain is only at the high end anyways. The low end does suffer.

If you don't have Crawford Cats, I suggest getting them and leaving everything else stock. This is what I did and I very happy with the sound and performance.

Cats will likely be my next mod. Sounds like a good choice. Thanks.

yikes, i guess you all need something to show for this, our shop kicks ***...

Bone stock 350z with hks intake and stock intake.
Nothing else
My g35

w/ following- Crawford intake, Z-Tube w/ JWT popcharger, Stock headers, Ichiba test pipes, Fuji Y-pipe, Apexi N1 GT Exhaust (JPN Only).

Seriously, if its not apparent to you yet, i will get an overlay of my dyno and his...this is a huge fvcking difference @ 3k-5K world of difference. I will get the dyno from 2.2K and up, it shows up even greater..

When I first installed my Greddy Evo 2 I was very surprise with the gains I got. To be honest I didn't expect much but it actually made a big difference. I drive 5AT and everytime I floor my car when it was stock it would just takeoff. After the install it was a different beast. I was rolling on first gear with VDC ON and when I floored it actually peeled out. The car got sideways and the funny thing about it is that the VDC didn't even kick in. The low end power and torque was awesome. Maybe you should try something like this instead of just changing the Y pipe. Just a thought my .02 cents on the matter. Goodluck!

If it was me i would just sell the Y-pipe and get a X-pipe with true dual exhaust. More noticable gains.

This sounds like a good idea as well.

10 hp for $1000 + All hail..... lol...

srry, I just never understood the pursuit of "all motor" power from a 3000+ lb car....

What do you feel out of those mods gave you the biggest gain, or did you do them all at the same time?
