there is no "best" set up........its all a guessing game.........certain combinations with yield more power........but nobody knows which combos make the most power.............i would go with crawford or nismo headers, crawford or labree cats, and HKS or Invidia exhaust

I am personally going with strup headers(due to ease of installation and price), Labree test pipes, and Greddy Evo2 in near future.

I would go Crawford Cats, Alphawerks Headers, Tanabe Y Pipe, and Fujitusbo Legalis R Exhaust on my budget.

The headers i got for $400 used.
Cats i will get for $487.
Y Pipe is $370 at 9secondracing.com 70mm

Im not sure if i will get exhaust or not.

I concur with 99atlantics suggestion. Strup headers are a great bang for the buck and exceptional quality and manufacturer backing. We have 'em on sale for only $474.95 right now. check the vendor classifieds and our website.
I don't have any expereince with them, but have heard positive things about the Labree high flow cats too - haven't done any research on them yet.

update that I know of regarding the Injen SES is that the fiberglass issue has been resolved - spoke to Injen directly last week - and we have them on sale too - only $831.60. Also, the Titanium tipped version, since I know that's the next question to be asked, is not yet available. The version for the Z is due to be available early March. The one for the G will probably be another month behind that.

if you don't do exhaust i'd chuck (sell) the y-pipe - i've read numerous people bitching about lack of backpressure and severe loss of low end power running headers+cats+ypipe+stock catback.....headers+cats+stocky&catback seems to be a very good combination ont he other hand.

If you have a Y-Pipe that doesnt come with the catback exhaust then you dont have a cat back, like you said "stocky&catback" It would be stock and Y-back.
