Sanding headlights.

I want to use 1000 grit sand paper and then put a coat of clear on them. Anyone ever done that?

ILLicit 08-29-2008 05:12 AM

You need to WETSAND it w/ atleast a 2000 grid sandpaper, then have them buffed and polished, best to use the electric buffer wheel, makes your life easier, and turns the headlights looking brand new.

But should I put a coat of clear on them? The same clear coat for paint?

Sand them down with 600-800 grit sandpaper...it takes all the yellow haze and most of the tiny rock chips away. Then use 2 coats of Auto clear (not rattle can clear) I have been doing this for years and it works and looks great

If you don't use clear, you can start with 1500 then rubbing compound then polishing compound then plastix then some final polish.

I start with 1200 and go to 2000 then use a buffer to bring back the shine

If you are going to clear, no need to use anything finer than 6-800, if you are going to polish, then work up to 2000 grit, then hit it with a machine. Its the way I've always done it

Is this clear coat ok to use? It's for the base coat on a car. Says on can to spray and then use rubbing compound to make it shine.

Did this with 1500 grit. Wanted to do both but ended up doing only one :D It's hard as **** to make it shine again and my arms gave away.

I'll get it better with a buffer next time.

I went sand it. Used rubbing compound. Put a coat of clear and let it dry. Then I buffed it rubbing compound and PlastiX

if you are going to clear it, it's very important to use good clear coat. not a rattle can.

alsacorp sells activated clear coat in a rattle can, those work fine.

Andrei 08-31-2008 12:10 AM

I can I used is a Duplicolor clear coat that I bought from paintscratch. I :dunno: how good it is but it worked fine.

I need a buffer though to make it right.

mikeGmang 08-31-2008 02:20 AM

rattle can FTL

IvoryGT 08-31-2008 10:38 AM

if it's not activated clear, it won't be right, it's like spraying haze.

ClearBra_Guy 08-31-2008 05:10 PM

Skip the clear and put paint protection (clear bra) film on them and never worry about them again. The clear is just going to chip away again and get eaten by bug acid.

+1

I clearbra my lights :D
