Small Dent in Rear Bumper

I have heard that you can heat up the area of the dent and pull it out without damaging the paint job. Can anyone verify this and explain the process?

I fixed a 15"x9" dent in my girlfriends scion bumper. Take the bumper off, heat it from the back side with a heat gun, push it ou using a bunched up rag or towel.
