Hey Everybody as the title states I'm looking to paint my grill Black Chrome/Pearl/Smoke or whatever you want to call it. After searching around I found that the Tamiya Polycarbonate PS-31 paint is best suited best for the job versus VHT night shades, etc.

My question for you all is regarding prepping of the grill. I've read that most of you who paint their grill will sand it down with 800 grit paper then primer. However, I've also read in order to acheive that "black chrome" look you won't need to do that on our grill as it's already chrome much like the emblems. There is an option to use an adhesion promoter before using the spray paint. Would anyone here have any experience in doing this? If so, could you confirm if that is the correct process or explain why it's better to do the latter?

Also, for those who have painted their entire grill Mt.Fuji included. Did you remove the Mt.Fuji or leave in on and spray it all at once?

For this kind of painting, following the guys DIY is prob the way to go. You wouldnt want to sand down the chrome OE grill. It would defeat the purposes of this project.
After you clean with soap and water really well, let it dry completly, and try using rubbing alcohol to clean the rest up.
After you let it dry 100%. Attack the grill, hahaha, post pictures once your done. I would like to see the outcome.

 

Thanks for the input! I'm strongly leaning toward that. I just want to be at least 90% sure. I will definitely post pics when it's complete.

I bought an OE grille just for this project.

was going to clean it up and spray it with black tint spray ish,...

 

adhesion promoter is good to use because you wont be sanding the grill so the paint will stick better, it is sort of a clear primer in essence...without it you will likely have chips/peels much sooner than a grill that has been sanded and painted...i would remove the mt fuji and paint both seperately
