You could always use the bigger magnets all around but IMO you would only need to if your bumper had an opening in the middle like the Kuruma z or Kurookie.

Wonder if just putting a large metal plate behind the bumper would work or do you think the double magnets is best?

tether?
A piece of metal could def work as well. I think you're better off with magnets on both sides though so you get a pull coming from both sides. It really comes down to what materials you end up using and what is in-between.

The magnets are self centering so what I did was make up my plate bracket first, then taped the magnets behind the bumper. Placed the plate bracket on the front, magnets centered themselves, removed tape and glued them into place. Let it cure overnight.

I forgot to mention that magnets are directional. Common knowledge for some but it has been years since I played around with magnets (use to play with them frequently working with my dad as he rebuilt transmissions )....it will be obvious when you try and put the pieces together.

I'll add some of this to the write up.

Happy Holidays!

You used DX48 magnets behind the bumper and DX04 for the bracket, but in the BRZ link that you based your DIY after he used the DX04 for the bumper and DEH2 for the brackets. Is there a particular reason you switched magnets? The DEH2 are like 4x cheaper, did you think that they would not be powerfull enough? I've got a poly bumper and i dont want to spend more than i have to but i dont want it to fall off either lol

^That-s why I decided to put one on a couple years ago Gary After running without for years, I finally got pulled over by local LE ....let off with a "make sure you go put it on" so I obeyed the law lol

It was recommended to me to use the larger magnets as the ones listed in the DIY didn't seem strong enough. I've gone about 80 on the freeway so far with this and the plate remains It's possible you could use the smaller ones or some combination but I have never tried any others.
