how do you get the rubber cup under the shifter back on?

does anyone know any tips on how to get the rubber cup under the shifter to get back in place? i just installed the rouge short shifter and i cant seem to put the rubber cup back into the round hole area under the shifter any tips would be really appreciated thanks
