help on fiberglass work

i thought since my front bumper was made out of fiberglass, i thought i'd do some little reinforcing myself. well, 3 hrs later, the front bumper feels a little too heavy for it to withstand the 2 bolts on each side (so it seems)... so far i only used one layer of fiberglass cloth, but i think i mightve went overboard on the resin. after the resin is completly dried off, should i sand down the fiberglass i just laid to shave some weight? advice would be greatly appreciated. (and please dont tell me that i shouldve taken it to the body shop) thanks.
