Smelly socks in the ventilation system
I have a problem that has arisen within the last few weeks. When I start my 2005 G-35 coupe, an unpleasant odor comes from the ventilation system for the first 15-30 seconds. The odor smells like dirty gym socks or clothes hamper odor. I did not have this problem last year (which would have been the first summer since I purchased the car in Oct 2005).
A different but somewhat related problem is that whenever I start my car, the A/C system comes on in recirculation mode, even though I was in fresh air mode when I shut the engine off. Is this normal? If so, what's the logic?
Thanks.

turn your ac completely off a couple minutes prior to shutting off the car...this will help that mildewy smell when you start up...also check into a charcoal in cabin air filter...no idea about the mode switching on you when you restart it though
the mode switching when you turn on your vehicle is normal. 5 minutes before you reach your destination, switch the mode for the outside air so the water in the evaporator can fully drain. It is best to drive in this mode as much as possible to avoid odors. I had the same problem and I purchased an air vent cleaner made by BG and did what I mentioned above and the problem is gone.

That's rather impractical/impossible in my case, since I live only 3 minutes away from my place of employment.

Have u changed your cabin air filter yet ?? if not try swapping it out with a new cabin air filter which can be bought usally at a autozone or any local part store or stealership
Joe
BTW: your in cabin air filter is located behind your glove box

No, not yet. I've got 11,000 miles on the vehicle. I understand it should be changed because it is a filter, but I never would expect that a sock odor would result from not changing it. Do these filters get wet? I'm just puzzled why a filter that is supposed to catch dirt and dust would begin to smell bad.
