I have searched every headliner replacement thread I can find but I can't find an answer to this question. Do you remove the OEM cloth before applying new cloth (this goes for the A pillar too) and if so, did you use a thin layer of padding? If so, what kind?

Most places will just put the new suede or other material over the existing cloth

I know I'm kind of late on this but becareful the type of adhessive you use so it doesn't tack up. I would use two part or a heat activated adhessive, you can play with it and stretch it a lot more.
